Specialist, Environmental Literacy

The Specialist, Environmental Literacy at the Maryland State Department of Education focuses on developing and supporting K-12 environmental literacy programs aligned with state standards. Responsibilities include providing technical assistance, professional learning, and monitoring for initiatives like the Maryland Green Schools Act. The role aims to implement evidence-based strategies that enhance student readiness for college and careers, particularly for historically underserved populations.
This position provides best-in-class development and support of highly effective prekindergarten through grade 12 programs and initiatives aligned to the Maryland Next Generation Science Standards and Maryland State Environmental Literacy Standards to accelerate student performance in environmental literacy across local education agencies and early learning environments. This position develops and facilitates high-quality, research-based technical assistance, professional learning, and monitoring to support the Maryland Green Schools Act and Project Green Classrooms initiative, and related environmental literacy grant programs under service level agreement-based timelines and performance-based goals and objectives.

The Specialist, Environmental Literacy position identifies and supports evidence-based cross disciplinary opportunities to implement Maryland’s Next Generation Science Standards and Environmental Literacy Standards through strategies that promote culturally responsive teaching practices and student access and progression through college and career readiness pathways, such as dual enrollment, early/middle college, advanced placement, International Baccalaureate, industry-recognized credentials, and apprenticeships that are intentionally designed to prepare students to be college and career ready, especially those who have been historically underserved. This position will also support the implementation of specific Blueprint for Maryland’s Future programs and Maryland State Department of Education’s multiyear Strategic Plan initiatives.
