Job Description

EcoPoint, Inc. is seeking a Senior Environmental Technician for a full-time seasonal position. The role involves leading field crews in data collection and seed collecting across multiple states, including Colorado and surrounding areas. Candidates must have a relevant degree, experience in plant taxonomy, and the ability to work independently in remote locations. The job requires extensive travel and camping in the field.
Title: Senior Environmental Technician (Seasonal)

Location: Multiple Locations: Utah, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, Wyoming, New Mexico

Salary: $24-27/hr

Job Type: Full-time Seasonal

Travel Component: up to 100%

Working under the direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist, lead field crews in conducting field scouting research, data collection, and seed collecting activities. This position will be a critical intermediary to delegate tasks to local field crews and communicate with the Senior Environmental Scientist (Project Manager). These efforts are contracted to EcoPoint, Inc. to support the BLM’s Seeds of Success (SOS) Program. SOS is a program coordinated by the BLM to support seed collections from native plant populations to conserve and develop native plant materials for stabilizing, rehabilitating and restoring lands in the United States. Duties include managing a field crew, working with the Senior Environmental Scientist to develop plans and schedules, working in field with leading crews to scout populations, collect seed, collect and process plant specimens, plant identification, data collection, preparation of field forms and reports, data entry and labeling of field collections, seed processing, seed testing, and preparation of seeds for storage.

Required Qualifications/Experience
• Bachelor’s degree or higher with an emphasis in botany, forestry, ecology or related field
• Strong taxonomic skills, including formal class and fieldwork in plant taxonomy and plant identification of western US species
• Familiarity with the flora of the western US and experience in plant community delineation and field data collection
• At least 1 year of experience leading field crews
• Experience with GIS and GPS
• Ability to collect data electronically using a smart phone (provided)
• Demonstrated ability to work independent of supervision
• Willingness to work alone in remote areas and camp overnight in field locations
• Excellent time management, record keeping, administrative, and communication skills
• Valid driver’s license
• At least 1 year of experience navigating off-road terrain in remote areas using 4x4 equipment

Preferred Qualifications/Experience
• Two or more years experience of leading field crews

Physical demands
• Ability to conduct fieldwork under a variety of environmental conditions (heat, cold, rain, wind etc.) is required.
• Must have physical strength and endurance sufficient to carry field equipment and supplies and hike over steep, and rugged terrain. Work may include bending and squatting on uneven terrain for extended periods of time.

Other Conditions
• Ability and willingness to camp in primitive, backcountry conditions.
• Willingness to participate in overnight, multi-day trips.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $24.00 - $27.00 per hour

Expected hours: No more than 50 per week
