Description:
The Agulhas System Climate Array (ASCA) is an array of moorings, which was partially deployed from April 2015 to April 2016, and fully deployed from April 2016 to May 2018. We are looking for a dynamic physical oceanographer to lead the analysis of this mooring data in the context of regional impacts to South Africa in terms of shelf dynamics, coastal rainfall patterns, and interactions with embayments such as Algoa Bay. The incumbent will work with a multi-disciplinary team within SAEON and will interact with teams at both UCT and NMU to understand the interactions of the Agulhas Current regionally. They will also collaborate with scientists involved with ASCA from the Netherlands and the US, and work closely with other observational, statistical, and modeling experts from Germany. There are opportunities to go to sea on data acquisition cruises and influence the direction of scientific development.
The key focus will be on publishing work from ASCA, but the incumbent will also have opportunities to get involved in other projects or establish new research initiatives, supervise students, and gain lecturing experience. SAEON and UCT serve as hubs for international scientists specializing in Indian Ocean and Agulhas research, both observational and modeling. There will be ongoing opportunities to work with visiting global experts.
