Barr Engineering Company is seeking a Mid-Level Environmental Data Management Technician for a hybrid role based in Salt Lake City, UT. Responsibilities include managing data in the EQuIS database, ensuring data accuracy using advanced Excel skills, and collaborating with project teams. Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree in a related field and at least 3 years of experience. Strong analytical, communication, and teamwork skills are essential.
The role - what you'll do
Barr is looking for a detail-oriented and proactive environmental data management technician to become a valuable addition to our Assessment and Remediation business team. In this dynamic hybrid role, you will primarily manage data in the EQuIS environmental database and utilize your advanced skills in Microsoft Excel to ensure the accuracy and integrity of environmental data. Your key responsibilities will include data entry, verification against original documents, entering geological information and generating boring logs, creating charts and reports, and employing advanced Excel functions. You will also collaborate with other data management staff and project teams, adhering to processes established by the data management department.

Your impact - key responsibilities
• Technical knowledge: Leverage your scientific understanding to effectively manage, validate, and analyze substantial datasets using EQuIS and Microsoft Excel, employing advanced tools like pivot tables, macros, and formulas for precision.
• Project support: Drive the success of environmental projects by ensuring accurate data workflows, coordinating with technical teams, and meeting data deliverables in line with project timelines and client specifications.
• Problem solving: Use scientific reasoning to identify discrepancies and assess data quality, contributing to the resolution of technical issues in environmental datasets and ensuring meaningful interpretations within regulatory contexts.
• Communication: Create clear data summaries, charts, boring logs, and figures for project documentation, and provide concise updates to project managers and stakeholders.
• Interpersonal savvy: Collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders to enhance data quality and project outcomes, while maintaining a proactive approach to professional growth within a supportive team.
About the opportunity
• Hybrid: This position may offer a hybrid work arrangement, allowing you to split your time between a Barr office and a home office. You can be based out of Barr's offices in Grand Rapids, Michigan; Minneapolis or Duluth, Minnesota; or Salt Lake City, Utah.
About you - required core competencies
• Education: Bachelor's degree in environmental studies or sciences, geology, chemistry, biology, or a related field.
• Experience: Minimum of 3 years of professional experience with databases and advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including working with charts, macros, pivot tables, and other functions.
• Software: Strong computer skills, specifically with EQuIS and Microsoft Suite.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.
Helpful additional experience (not required)
• Software: Familiarity with Access, Python, R, and/or Power BI.
• Knowledge of chemistry and/or geology.
• Understanding of state and federal environmental regulations.
Compensation: The anticipated hourly range for this position is $28.90-$36.70, varying based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other factors. Eligible employees may also receive a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This role is classified as non-exempt (hourly) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
