Job Description

The State of Wisconsin is hiring Limited Term Fisheries Technicians for the Wild Rose Hatchery and Kewaunee Fish Facility. Positions involve working with cold and cool water fish species, including feeding, monitoring, and facility maintenance. Wild Rose roles are part-time for 32 weeks, while Kewaunee roles are full-time for 2 months during the steelhead spawning season. Pay is $16.98 per hour.

LTE Hatchery Fisheries Technicians (Wild Rose and Kewaunee)

We are dedicated to working with Wisconsinites while preserving and enhancing the natural resources of Wisconsin. In partnership with individuals and organizations; DNR staff manage fish, wildlife, forests, parks, air and water resources while promoting a healthy, sustainable environment and a full range of outdoor opportunities.

The Wisconsin DNR is hiring two (2) LTE (Limited Term Employee) – Fisheries Technicians at our Wild Rose Hatchery in Wild Rose, WI and (2) LTE Fisheries Technicians at our Kewaunee Besadny Fish Facility in Kewaunee, WI.

The positions at Wild Rose will be working 32 hours per week for 32 weeks (8 months), for a maximum of 1039 hours, and will include working every other weekend. One position will start April 7th and the other will begin on April 21st.

The positions at Kewaunee will be full time for approximately 8 weeks (2 months) during the Steelhead spawning season and will include occasional weekend and holiday work.
Position Summary

Wild Rose:

These positions are for Limited Term Fisheries Technicians working with cold and Coolwater fish species at the Wild Rose Hatchery and the associated propagation areas. These positions assist with all phases of the Coldwater and Coolwater fisheries propagation, as well as facilities management duties. These positions receive day to day guidance from senior hatchery staff.
• 60% Independently feed fish, fill and adjust feeders, monitor feeding activities. Clean tanks, raceways, and ponds. Observes behavior and monitor for diseases and water quality. Assist with seining moving and sorting fish between ponds.
• 25% Maintain buildings, grounds and equipment as directed.
• 10% Assist in seining and loading fish for distribution. Drive distribution truck to stocking location. Temper fish and release to stream/lake.
• 5% Assist in spawning and hatching of eggs, egg picking, fry clean up and distribution to start tanks.

Kewaunee:

These positions will be working with cold water fish species at the Besadny Anadromous Fish Facility and the associated propagation areas. The positions will primarily assist with brood stock care and spawning activities of trout and salmon returning to the weirs from Lake Michigan. Additional work will include facility maintenance and providing educational programs to groups on site. These positions receive day to day guidance from senior hatchery staff.

The positions will be working full time (40 hours per week) for approximately 2 months during the spring steelhead run and will include occasional weekend and holiday work.
• 50% Assist in the collection and care of wild brood stocks, as well as spawning of eggs. Clean tanks, raceways, and ponds. Observes behavior and monitor for diseases and water quality. Assist with seining moving and sorting fish between ponds.
• 40% Maintain buildings, grounds and equipment as directed.
• 10% Assist in seining and loading fish for distribution. Drive distribution truck to stocking location. Temper fish and release to stream/lake.Salary Information

These positions pay $16.98 per hour and are in pay schedule and range 06-12. Compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.

This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and will not automatically lead to permanent state employment or be entitled to the same benefits as permanent employees.
