Job Description
The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources is hiring a Landscape Plant Expert to enhance community health in urban areas through research-based information on landscape plants. Responsibilities include providing horticultural knowledge, collaborating with stakeholders, and participating in studies on drought-resistant plants. A Master's degree in a related field is required, along with experience in outreach and applied research. This is a full-time position based in San Francisco, CA.
About the Job
This UCCE Advisor role focuses on developing and extending research-based information on ornamental trees and other landscape plants to enhance community health and quality of life in urban environments. You will work closely with stakeholders to identify community needs and develop effective solutions.
Main Responsibilities
Provide relevant, scientifically supported information to audiences based on a comprehensive needs assessment; develop and extend horticultural knowledge to nursery and landscape professionals; and collaborate with non-profit agencies and organizations invested in planting and maintaining greenspaces.
The Advisor will participate in ongoing UC/USFS studies at UC Riverside to identify drought, heat, and pest-resistant landscape trees and other plants; develop effective non-chemical integrated pest management methods to prevent and/or control targeted pests; reduce pathogens to conform to disinfected secondary recycled water reuse; and explore novel approaches to reusing food waste and other organic materials in landscape settings.
Educational Qualifications
A minimum of a Master's degree in environmental, urban, or ornamental horticulture or a related field is required at the time of appointment. Experience in developing multidisciplinary teams and programs, a demonstrated ability or record of applied research in relevant topics, knowledge and demonstrated use of methods of conducting outreach and delivery, and ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule are also desired qualifications.
