Duties and Responsibilities
• Under general supervision, teach college-level courses in Sustainable Agriculture and perform related work including, but not limited to, development of teaching strategies, instructional materials and methods which: 1) use current technology in instruction where appropriate; 2) integrate instruction of appropriate quantitative/logical thinking skills into course contents; 3) develop, update and assess the competencies and skills for course Student Learning Outcomes; 4) address the learning needs of community college students; and 5) develop and teach courses using a variety of delivery systems (e.g., face-to-face, online, hybrid and/or other distance delivery formats including field trips) as needed and appropriate.
• Coordinate Sustainable Agriculture course offerings, including Early College, and curriculum with other University of Hawaii Community Colleges in order to promote collaboration, optimize enrollment, and meet students' academic needs in Sustainable Agriculture across the UHCC campuses.
• Develop and maintain a culturally-relevant Sustainable Agriculture curriculum and pathway from within the College's Early College program for efficient transfer through Windward CC to UH baccalaureate institutions.
• Develop a curriculum that provides practical applications of Sustainable Agriculture such as aquaculture, aquaponics, hydroponics, food crop production, food safety and post-harvest handling, irrigation and water management, landscape agriculture, nursery/greenhouse management, plant propagation, small machinery training, soil development and management, and technology applications to agriculture.
• Oversee use of the Hale Uluwehi Sustainable Agriculture facility, including the use and maintenance of the aquaculture/aquaponics systems.
• Collaborate with department to develop and implement a comprehensive plan to maximize enrollment in Sustainable Agriculture classes at Windward Community College.
• Provide mentorship to students in internships and research projects.
• Teaching assignments may include distance education, evenings, weekends, non-credit classes, early college classes at local high schools, including Hawaiian immersion schools, and/or off-campus assignments.
• Prepare and revise course outlines, perform course and program-level assessments, including program self-studies and annual reports.
• Participate in departmental, faculty and administrative committees, community service, in service training, and assessment activities.
• Independently plan, organize and carry out instructional and non-instructional assignments. including, but not limited to, preparing program budget requests, managing program/project budgets, managing supplies and equipment inventories, collecting data, preparing reports, and providing oversight of chemical waste management (disposal and storage).
• Maintain a minimum of one office hour per week for each course taught.
• Develop and maintain an approved program of professional self-development
• Participate in student recruitment, orientation, retention, and graduation activities.
• Conduct community outreach and on/off-campus program promotion of Sustainable Agriculture.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
• Master's in agriculture, botany, tropical plant and soil sciences, biological engineering, molecular biosciences and bioengineering, natural resources, natural resources and environmental management, tropical conversation biology and environmental science, biological sciences, or ecology, OR,
• Bachelor's in agriculture, botany, tropical plant and soil sciences, biological engineering, molecular biosciences and bioengineering, natural resources, natural resources and environmental management, tropical conversation biology and environmental science, biological sciences, or ecology, and three years of related work experience.
Desirable Qualifications
• Coursework and/or experience in related fields such as agroecology, aquaculture, aquaponics, hydroponics, sustainable food systems, organic farming, horticulture, crop production, food systems, ethnobotany, tropical agriculture, landscape agriculture, native Hawaiian plants, integration of digital technologies into agriculture, and/or international development and global food/agriculture systems.
• Experience managing or operating a farm, nursery, aquaculture/aquaponics facility, or similar operation for commercial, educational, or research purposes.
• Successful teaching experience teaching community college courses as substantiated by both student and peer assessments.
• Knowledge of and/or ability to incorporate Hawaiian language and/or Hawaiian traditional knowledge, values and practices as they relate to sustainable agriculture.
• Knowledge of the latest technologies utilized in agricultural production, including sustainable practices.
• Knowledge of the agriculture industry and community in Hawaii, especially Windward Oahu. Ability and/or successful experience collaborating with industry and community organizations.
• Knowledge of or experience with federal and state regulations governing the use of vertebrate animals in education and research.
• Demonstrated ability to secure Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) protocol approval for working with vertebrate animals.
• Knowledge of federal and state regulations governing the use of fish in institutional education and research.
• Knowledge of federal and state regulations governing the importation and culture of biological organisms into the State of Hawaii for education and research purposes.
• Demonstrated ability in curriculum development including online and/or hybrid instruction.
• Demonstrated ability to work with students, peers, and staff.
• Knowledge and understanding of student-centered learning and the community college philosophy.
• Experience conducting course level assessment of student learning outcomes, and analyzing relevant data, and utilizing the results to improve instruction.
• Knowledge and understanding of Windward Community College's mission.
• Demonstrated ability to serve as a mentor to students engaged in project-based research and/or internships.
