Minimum Qualifications

Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Position Summary

This role involves coordination, management, supervision, customer service, delivery, and promotion of youth programs. This incumbent is responsible for the operation of the Georgia 4-H Environmental Education Program at the Wahsega 4-H Center. Frequent evening and weekend work is required. On-site housing is provided. Work will include hiring, training, and supervision of seasonal environmental education staff and daily operation of residential and day-use programs for school audiences in grades K-12.

Job responsibilities also include care for program animals, overseeing high ropes equipment and operation, and assisting the center director in training and supervising summer camp counselors.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
• Teach a wide variety of subjects to children in grades K-12 with an emphasis on 8-14 year-old youth.
• Knowledge of the environment and comfort in working in the outdoors.
• Work with and care for reptiles and amphibians.
• Communicate with youth, adults, and young adults.
• Market and promote programs to school administrators, teachers, and UGA Extension personnel.
• Written and spoken communication skills.
• Computer skills to maintain email and printed communication with group leaders.
• Supervise the work of others.
• Work independently.
• First aid knowledge.
• Training or willingness to be trained as a Red Cross instructor of First Aid/CPR/Lifeguarding.
• Training in or willingness to be trained to Level 2 high-ropes challenge course facilitation.
• Lifeguarding in pool or waterfront.
Physical Demands
• Lift 20 pounds.
• Sit for significant periods of time while working at a computer.
• Stand for extended periods of time.
• Lift cleaning supplies and teaching supplies.
• Driving as needed to perform job duties.
• Work at 40 feet high facilitating high ropes activities.
• Hike for 2 miles on uneven trails while teaching a class.
Duties /Responsibilities
• Provides overall leadership for the on-site day-to-day operation of the Georgia 4-H Environmental Education Program at Wahsega 4-H Center.
• Communicate with seasonal EE staff, dining hall staff, school group leaders, etc. to ensure a well-run program.
• At times helping out in other departments at Wahsega when needed (housekeeping, maintenance, dining hall).

Percentage of time: 40
• Hires, trains, and supervises instructional staff for fall and spring seasons.
• Schedules and oversees staff duties including teaching, cleanup, and related duties.
• Provides feedback to seasonal staff to help them improve their skills.
• Maintain good supervision of the staff and program to ensure safety.

Percentage of time: 20
• Develops schedules for school groups attending an Environmental Education program session and serves as the primary communication link with the schools and the 4-H Center.
• Is in daily communication via email and phone calls with group leaders to acquire all the necessary information to plan the field study.
• Keeps the Wahsega calendar up to date with all necessary information.

Percentage of time: 15
• Oversee the care of Wahsega captive animals, which include various reptiles, amphibians, chickens, and invertebrates.
• Train seasonal staff to care for animals and supervise them in their work.

Percentage of time: 10
• Acquire and maintain a level 2 High Ropes certification.
• Acquire the abilities to be the main person overseeing the high ropes program at Wahsega.

Percentage of time: 5
• Assists the center director in training and supervising summer camp counselors.
• During counselor training week, train counselors with the EE type classes they will be teaching.
• Train summer camp counselors on high ropes.
