FM is offering a Graduate Internship in Climate Risk and Resilience - GIS for 2025 in Norwood, MA. The role involves working with scientists to develop methods for hazard identification and risk assessment. Responsibilities include data acquisition and processing geospatial data. Ideal candidates are graduate students with strong analytical skills and knowledge in geospatial analysis, data science, and programming. This is an in-office position with temporary relocation support available.

The Climate Risk and Resilience research group at FM is looking for creative, self-motivated individuals for internships. Selected candidates will work alongside a unique group of scientists to protect the value of FM clients' businesses by developing methods to identify hazards, assess risk, and produce loss prevention solutions that are efficient and cost-effective. The internship will be supervised by senior staff in the Climate Risk and Resilience research group and provides an opportunity to engage in solving real-world science and engineering problems in the insurance industry.

As a future GIS intern, you will be contributing to a data library which includes input datasets for various natural hazard models. Responsibilities include data acquisition, conversion and transformation of various geospatial data types through a scientific programming approach.

Graduate students (with good academic standing for graduation), who are seeking to expand their research experience beyond academia and bring expertise in the following active research areas:
• Geospatial analysis and development
• Data science and scientific programming

General:
• Strong analytical skills and solid knowledge of geospatial processing and database management principles
• Hands-on experience with the following: Raster analysis, coordinate system projections and transformations, vector relational data management
• Proficiency in processing large volumes of data
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desired:
• Experience in code development in programming languages such as python, R, or C++, and code documentation through Jupyter Notebooks
• Comfortable writing shell scripts and using APIs to automate workflows
• Comfortable in Microsoft Windows and Linux environments

This is an in-office role based in Norwood, MA. Temporary relocation support provided for selected qualified candidate.
