Job Description

The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is hiring a Fish and Wildlife Technician 1 in Stamford, NY. Responsibilities include conducting compliance inspections, issuing permits, and assisting with wetland delineations. Candidates should have relevant coursework and preferred experience with GIS and wetland identification. The position requires travel, working in various weather conditions, and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. This is a full-time, hourly position funded until 2026.
Full job description

The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description Assisting in the compliance inspections after construction is complete to confirm applicants worked within the requirements of issued DEC permits; meeting with applicants in the field and issue logging crossing permits for DEC protected streams; assisting with Article 15 (protected waterbodies) and Article 24 (freshwater wetlands) site visits with the public for permitting and enforcement cases; and conducting wetland delineations for DEC regulated wetlands.

The minimum qualifications required for this vacancy. Minimum Qualifications 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries; marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.Preferred: Experience with GPS, GIS, Microsoft Word, and Excel Experience with wetland delineation including identifying vegetation, describing soil, and navigation using aerial and topographic mapping is desirable.

Additional comments regarding the vacancy. Additional Comments This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2026, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.Must be able to work in remote areas.Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required.Overtime may be required. Overnight travel may be required.Weekends and holidays may be required.
