Job Description

The Environmental Services Attendant at Opelousas General Health System is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and safety in the hospital. Duties include cleaning patient rooms, surgical and public areas, handling linen and waste, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and communicating with staff. A high school diploma is preferred, along with previous experience in environmental services or healthcare. This position is located in Opelousas, LA and is not remote.
The Environmental Services Attendant is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment in all areas of the hospital, including patient care, surgical, laboratory, ancillary, and public spaces. This role ensures infection prevention, patient safety, and comfort by performing cleaning, trash/linen handling, floor care, and related environmental services duties in compliance with organizational, OSHA, CMS, and hospital policies




Essential Duties & Responsibilities:


Key Responsibilities


Environmental Cleaning & Maintenance



Perform daily and discharge cleaning of patient rooms, offices, restrooms, surgical areas, and ancillary spaces.
Carry out the 7-Step Cleaning process, including trash/linen removal, disinfecting, dusting, mopping, vacuuming, and sanitizing high-touch surfaces.
Clean and maintain specialized areas:
Patient Care Rooms and Areas (nourishment stations, nurses’ stations, medicine rooms, supply closets)
Obstetrics (including C-Section suites)
Surgical and sterile areas (operating rooms, decontamination, central sterile, special procedure, locker rooms)
Laboratory, Medical Imaging, Pharmacy, Respiratory, and other ancillary areas
Clean bathrooms, sinks, toilets, showers, mirrors, walls, doors, furniture, and fixtures.
Sweep, mop, and vacuum hallways, stairs, lobbies, and offices.
High dust and clean light fixtures, vents, windows, and ceilings.
Properly and safely use cleaning chemicals in accordance with manufacturer, hospital, and infection control guidelines.
Maintain cleanliness of equipment and perform minor repairs; report broken equipment immediately.

Linen & Waste Management



Collect, sort, and transport soiled linen; replenish clean linen for discharge patient rooms.
Inventory linen periodically and report supply needs.
Safely handle and dispose of hazardous waste following hospital and regulatory procedures.
Empty trash, garbage, and biohazard containers when three-quarters full.

Safety & Compliance



Always Observe safety precautions (including use of wet floor signage).
Respond promptly to the hospital Fire and Emergency Codes.
Report accidents, injuries, hazards, and unsafe conditions immediately with documentation.
Follow OSHA, HIPAA, CMS, and hospital risk management standards.
Secure assigned areas, equipment, and assets upon completion of duties.

Communication & Teamwork



Establish and maintain positive relationships with patients, staff, and visitors.
Communicate repairs or maintenance needs to the Zone Leader or EVS manager.
Keep managers informed of pertinent information and job progress.
Participate in training programs, safety meetings, and continuing education opportunities.

Other Duties



Complete assigned tasks in a timely manner, documenting work on daily checklists.
Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Environmental Services.

Education: High School Diploma/GED preferred.



Additional Experience Preferred







Previous environmental services, housekeeping, or custodial experience preferred; healthcare setting experience a plus.
Knowledge of cleaning techniques, floor care equipment, infection control, and chemical safety.
Ability to follow detailed cleaning protocols and use PPE appropriately.
Strong attention to detail, time management, and teamwork skills.
Ability to stand, walk, push, pull, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs. regularly.
Flexibility to work various shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed.
