Job Description

The State of Wisconsin is seeking an Environmental Health Sanitarian for its Division of Food and Recreational Safety. This field-based role, located in Crawford or Iowa County, involves enforcing food and health safety regulations, conducting inspections, and providing consultation to various stakeholders. Candidates can work at either the Entry or Senior level, with a comprehensive benefits package offered. Commuting expenses are not reimbursed.

What We’re Seeking: DATCP’s Division of Food and Recreational Safety in the Bureau of Food and Recreational Businesses is recruiting for an Environmental Health Sanitarian – Retail & Recreation Emphasis (Entry or Senior). We will be filling this position at the Entry or Senior level depending on the qualifications of the selected candidates.

The position will be field based and will be headquartered in one of the counties it serves: Crawford or Iowa County.

Qualifying candidates are not required to live in a county headquarter location. However, there is no expense reimbursement for drive time and gas mileage to commute to the assigned headquarter location. The specific headquarter city used for determining payment of drive time and expense reimbursement will be determined at the time of hire.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for enforcement of food & health safety laws, administrative codes, regulations, and standards governing retail food and recreational licensing programs under the authority of Wisconsin Statues. The employee must have the ability to work independently, organize and prioritize a variety of tasks, maintain their schedule, and complete their assignments.

Work involves on-site evaluation, inspection, and documentation of sanitation, processes, equipment, and hazards; application of codes and statutes; providing technical consultation and educational services to industry representatives, business owners/operators, agents, local and state officials, the general public, etc.

Food businesses include: Retail food establishments, including mobile food establishments, transient food establishments and vending operations.

Recreational businesses include: Recreational-educational camps; campgrounds; public swimming facilities; hotels; motels; tourist rooming houses and bed & breakfast establishments.

Salary Information

The entry level position is in schedule-range 15-04 with a starting pay of $30.09-31.59 per hour. The senior level position is in schedule-range 15-03 with a starting pay of $31.45-34.41.

A $1.00 per hour add-on will be awarded to the selected applicant who passes the bilingual assessment for English and Spanish and/or Mandarin.

A $0.30 per hour Registered Sanitarian (RS) or NEHA REHS/Registered Sanitarian (RS) add-on may be available depending on qualifications.

This position is not represented by a collective bargaining unit. A 12-month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.

Job Details

DATCP does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the selected applicant being able to provide documentation of eligibility to work in the United States.

A criminal background check will be performed on the selected applicant prior to an offer of employment.

Possession of a valid driver's license, or the ability to provide one’s own transportation for work purposes, is required.

Ability to obtain the Wisconsin Registered Sanitarian (RS) or the NEHA REHS/RS certification within three years of hire.

Travel is required for approximately 90% of this position’s duties.

Possess physical abilities to climb and work at elevated heights such as on catwalks.

Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, and lift up to 50 lbs.

Through use of sight and hearing must be able to observe physical surroundings.

Ability to complete outdoor job activities 12 months of the year. The employee will encounter inclement weather and extreme temperatures.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified candidates will have the following:
• Possession of a valid Wisconsin Registered Sanitarian (RS) or NEHA REHS/Registered Sanitarian (RS) certification

OR
• The REHS/RS credential and application eligibility at the time of hire
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Environmental Health from a college accredited in the United States; or
• Bachelor’s degree or higher accredited in the United States (with 30 semester hours of college credit in basic Science coursework; college credit in Math or Statistics); and
• Two or more years of work experience in the field of environmental health; or
• Associate degree with 5+ years of work experience in the field of environmental health
