Job Description

The University of Georgia is hiring an Environmental Education Program Specialist for the Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Athens, GA. This role involves planning and maintaining teaching gardens, developing community garden programs, overseeing historic buildings, managing tools and live animals, and creating educational curricula. Candidates should have relevant technical knowledge and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. The position requires physical activity and is full-time.
About the Position

The University of Georgia is seeking a highly skilled Environmental Education Program Specialist to join our team at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center. As an integral part of our Environmental Education department, this role will provide direct instructional support to participants in our Environmental Education and Summer Camping programs.
Key Responsibilities
• Planning and Planting of Teaching Gardens: Develop and maintain a 72 x 85 garden designed for youth interaction with crops, including planning, planting, harvesting, record keeping, and managing garden staff.
• Community Garden Program Development: Create and implement a community garden program that promotes environmental education and community engagement.
• Historic Buildings Maintenance: Oversee the upkeep of historic buildings, including Sterling House, Elizabeth House, Tompkins Inn, and several covered teaching spaces.
• Pioneer Tools Management: Maintain pioneer tools, including a brace and bit, shaving horse, saws, pulleys, etc.
• Blacksmith Forge Care: Ensure the proper care and maintenance of the blacksmith forge.
• Care of Live Animals: Manage the care of 14 chickens and 2 sheep.
• Native American Classes and Curriculum: Develop and deliver Native American classes and curriculum, including statewide education boxes available for checkout.
• Rock Eagle Hike Curriculum: Create and implement Rock Eagle hike curriculum and materials related to forest ecology and the Rock Eagle Effigy.
• Diane Davies Natural History Museum Exhibits: Maintain and update Diane Davies Natural History Museum exhibits.
Requirements
• Education: Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate.
• Skills and Qualifications: Ability to work independently and within a team; knowledge of computer applications; ability to communicate effectively with youth and adults; and broad knowledge of the natural environment.
• Physical Demands: Work in adverse physical and weather conditions; walk at least 4 miles daily; lift 50 pounds; and drive as needed to perform job tasks.
