The role involves providing engineering services related to energy management and sustainability, conducting energy audits, preparing engineering designs, and collaborating with facilities staff. Job Description
Montgomery College has an immediate need for a full-time Energy and Sustainability Engineer. The typical work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. This is a grade 31, non-bargaining, exempt position. The position is located at Central Services, Rockville. The Energy and Sustainability Engineer, under supervision and/or direction, is responsible for providing professional engineering services and expertise related to energy, utility management, sustainability, and resource conservation.
Duties include but are not limited to:
• Investigate existing building energy consumption patterns and building benchmarking based upon U.S. EPA Energy Star Portfolio Management program.
• Advise Energy Manager of Energy Conservation Opportunities (ECOs), perform building energy audits and computerized energy simulations based upon ASHRAE standards and supervise the work of professional engineering consultants and contractors.
• Meet with campus facilities staff to understand operating conditions and discuss suggestions for maintenance and energy cost savings.
• Prepare engineering design drawings, prepare bid packages for contracted work, and inspect construction to ensure compliance with plans.
• Collaborates with Facilities staff in reviewing plans and specifications and inspecting construction to ensure that building designs are energy efficient, meet energy codes and standards, comply with legislatively mandated LEED certification, support sustainability goals, meet Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS), and obtain utility incentives.
• Participate in the preparation of Utility Master Plans and ensure College renovation and expansions comply with those plans.
• Using computerized energy analysis and life cycle costing tools, prioritize, analyze, evaluate, select and implement cost-effective energy retrofits, and monitor results to ensure predicted performance.
• Prepare engineering calculations, graphs and reports, to meet legislatively mandated requirements and inform management of resource conservation program progress.
• Evaluate, revise, and prepare College engineering design guidelines.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Required qualifications, training, certifications and experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering field.
• Four or more years of progressively responsible experience as a mechanical engineer working with building energy related systems.
• Experience with building design simulation and ASHRAE standards.
• The equivalent combination of education, training, certifications, or experience that demonstrates the ability to effectively perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
• Knowledge of the principles, concepts and techniques of mechanical engineering as applied to energy, utility management, sustainability, and resource conservation programs.
• Knowledge of best practices of integrated life cycle management (ILM), building utility and energy systems and resource conservation program outreach.
• Knowledge in energy conversion, energy conservation, environmental effects and resource conservation practices.
• Experience supporting, investigating, or integrating sustainability initiatives.
• Ability to perform professional engineering work related to the planning, evaluation, design, measurement, and construction of building energy systems.
• Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.
Licenses:
• State of Maryland Professional Engineering License (PE) license or Engineer in Training (EIT) certification with the training and demonstrated professional engineering experience, which allows acquiring a PE license upon completion of the minimum experience requirement for Engineer in Responsible Charge within one (1) year of employment.
• A valid driver’s license is required and evidence of good driving record.
Preferred qualifications:
• LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification, WELL Accredited Professional (WELL AP), or Certified Energy Manager (CEM) certification.
Salary range: $79,746 – $103,658 annually. Initial salary placement is based on candidate experience and internal equity. The maximum salary for this position is $127,571.
