The State of New Hampshire, Department of Environmental Services, Water Division, Land Resources Management Program has a full time vacancy for an Endangered Species and Environmental Review Biologist.

Summary:

Evaluates potential impacts on protected species of wildlife from proposed projects and provides technical assistance for avoiding, minimizing, and mitigating impacts as part of the NHDES Ecological Review Section.

YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS: Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree and 1.5 years of experience OR equivalent combination of 5.5 years of education and experience after completion of high school. Education and experience must be in biology, wildlife or fisheries management, wildlife or fisheries research, or related field.

License/Certification: Valid Driver's license required to perform field work statewide

Trainee Option: Candidates with an equivalent combination of 4.5+ years of relevant education and experience after completion of high school may be considered and hired in 'trainee status' for this position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of New Hampshire wildlife species and their habitats, especially protected wildlife. Knowledge of state and federal environmental laws and regulations. Ability to interpret regulations and policies and explain them to the public. Ability to interpret and evaluate maps, engineering plans, and technical documents. Ability to keep detailed records. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form. Ability to work independently in performing work duties. Ability to utilize computer programs to track and analyze data including ArcGIS and other mapping software.

Responsibilities:

Evaluates potential impacts to protected wildlife for proposed development projects and recommends options to avoid, minimize, and mitigate any adverse effects.

Prepares environmental documents and provides responses on behalf of the Department to project requests.

Organizes responses and maintains records of all correspondence related to projects.

Meets with project applicants and conducts site investigations as needed to assess ecological impacts resulting from proposed development activities.

Develops conservation measures to avoid, minimize, and mitigate harmful actions to protected wildlife and their habitats.

Coordinates with species experts at the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department and the Natural Heritage Bureau to obtain species-specific guidance for complex sites.

Provides technical assistance to federal and state agencies, as well as other groups and individuals, regarding ecological review processes.

Develops protocols, best management practices, and other documentation, including website content, for ecological reviews concerning protected species.

Recommends modifications to administrative rules or agency procedures related to permitting and enforcement to enhance program efficiency and effectiveness.

Prepares letters, reports, and oral presentations to communicate information about protected wildlife and the Ecological Review Program.
