Job Description
The Bay Foundation is seeking a Seasonal Field Technician for its Coastal Adaptation Program in Los Angeles, CA. The role involves habitat restoration, monitoring, and volunteer coordination at various coastal sites. Responsibilities include maintenance of restoration sites, conducting field surveys, and interacting with the public. Candidates must be able to lift 50 lbs and work outdoors in various weather conditions, including weekends.
About The Bay Foundation
The Bay Foundation (TBF) is a nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to implementing innovative, nature-based solutions along the Southern California coast. Our work focuses on coastal resilience, climate adaptation, ecosystem restoration, and community engagement through partnerships with universities, government agencies, nonprofits, and businesses. Our projects include restoring beach dunes, upland habitats, kelp forests, offshore eelgrass, and abalone populations. We also prioritize improving water quality, increasing water availability, and reducing single-use plastics.
TBF manages the Santa Monica Bay National Estuary Program (SMBNEP) in collaboration with the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission and partners with Loyola Marymount University to expand research and environmental monitoring through the Coastal Research Institute (CRI).
Our office is located on Loyola Marymount University’s Westchester campus in Los Angeles, California.
Position Overview
The Coastal Adaptation Program Seasonal Field Technician (Technician) reports to the Director of Programs. The role of the Technician is to assist in habitat restoration and monitoring, support field operations, and coordinate volunteer activities. Project sites are located on Los Angeles County beaches in Malibu, Santa Monica, Dockweiler, and Manhattan Beach.
Work Environments: The field technician is required to work safely and proactively to ensure the safety of others in a number of environments including wetlands, riparian, dunes, beaches and intertidal habitats. The nature of these environments are dynamic and subject to rapid and potentially hazardous changes in condition. Transportation and ability to lift gear (50 pounds) is expected.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Contribute to maintenance and establishment of coastal restoration sites; this includes weeding, seeding, seed collection, and maintenance of signage and related infrastructure
• Coordinate and lead volunteer events (must be available weekends for scheduled events)
• Maintain TBF infrastructure – Technician shall transport, deploy, and store equipment in a manner to prevent damage and/or theft of field, laboratory, and office equipment
• Interact with the general public and interested parties
• Conduct field based surveys, data collection, specimen collection, deployment and maintenance of field instruments/equipment, and photography/videography
• Effectively communicate with coworkers, supervisors, and project partners
• Represent TBF in professional manner at all times, including on social media.
Minimum Requirements
• Ability to lift 50lbs
• Enthusiastically support TBF’s organizational mission
• Possess a valid California driver’s license and access to a reliable automobile (with a minimum, liability insurance)
Physical Requirements
• Ability to perform manual physical labor (e.g. vegetation removal, digging, hammering, use of some power tools)
• Other physical demands may include, but a not limited to, standing for long periods of time, squatting, twisting, bending, moving on uneven ground, and lifting/moving heavy objects up to fifty pounds
• Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
• Ability to work weekends, as required to meet the needs of monitoring schedules, volunteer events, and other public engagements
TBF may, as its sole discretion, increase or reduce the duties or modify the title and job description of Employee from time to time, and any such increase, reduction, or modification shall not be deemed a termination of this Agreement. This is a non-exempt position under the CA labor law code.
Compensation
This is a part-time, seasonal position through June 30, 2025, with the possibility of extension based on funding availability and project needs. The position offers a pay rate of $25 per hour for 20-30 hours per week. Weekend availability is required.
