Job Description
The Climate & Militarism Fellow at Peace Economy Project will research the military's impact on climate change and environmental degradation, focusing on policy solutions for reducing its carbon footprint. Ideal for students interested in environmental policy and sustainability, the role involves analyzing military spending, developing advocacy materials, and engaging with policymakers. The fellowship offers hands-on experience and networking opportunities in climate justice and policy advocacy.
Position Overview
The Climate & Militarism Fellow will research how military operations contribute to climate change, environmental degradation, and resource exploitation. The fellow will also explore policy solutions for reducing the military’s carbon footprint and promoting sustainable peace economies. The research will support PEP’s campaigns to reallocate military spending toward climate resilience and green infrastructure.
This fellowship is ideal for graduate students, recent graduates, or upper-level undergraduates interested in environmental policy, sustainability, climate justice, and military accountability.
Key Responsibilities:
✅ Research the environmental impact of military operations, including fossil fuel consumption, pollution, and deforestation.
✅ Analyze military spending on energy and sustainability efforts.
✅ Examine how wars and military bases contribute to environmental destruction.
✅ Investigate the link between climate change, resource conflicts, and militarization.
✅ Develop policy briefs, reports, and advocacy materials proposing sustainable alternatives to militarized policies.
✅ Write blog posts, op-eds, and social media content to raise awareness.
✅ Monitor legislative initiatives related to military environmental regulations and climate funding.
✅ Engage with environmental advocacy groups and policymakers to push for sustainable policies.
Preferred Qualifications:
✔ Background in environmental policy, sustainability, climate science, international relations, or public policy.
✔ Strong research and writing skills with experience in climate or military policy analysis.
✔ Passion for climate justice, sustainability, and demilitarization advocacy.
✔ Ability to translate complex environmental data into accessible advocacy materials.
✔ Experience with climate policy research, GIS mapping, or data visualization is a plus.
✔ Self-motivated and able to work independently and collaboratively.
