Job Description

Green Spring Farms, LLC is seeking a California Farm Manager to oversee farm management in Tracy, CA. The role involves managing properties, enhancing operational efficiencies, communicating with stakeholders, and ensuring crop yields meet profitability targets. Responsibilities include farm management, financial performance oversight, and monitoring operations. The position requires frequent visits to properties to ensure effective farming practices and collaboration with onsite managers.
Green Spring Farms LLC is the Farm management company for Farmland LP. Farmland LP currently owns and operates over 19,000 acres of high value crops in northern California, northwest Oregon, and eastern Washington. We specialize in organic and regenerative production agriculture comprised of various annual row crops, wine grape vineyards, blueberries, nut crops, and tree fruit orchards. This includes farms we operate, and crops we produce ourselves, or on contracts with onsite professional management, or partner tenants we lease land to.




The California Farm Manager Is a participating collaborative member of the Green Spring Farms Management Team- regardless of location- that manages the company’s farms and Farm Management Companies in the area or region to which they are assigned.




This is a management position whose success is dependent upon achieving results through subordinates, staff, and peers while supporting and partnering with the company management and leadership teams.




He/she is expected to deliver crop yields and crop quality at a cost sufficient to meet planned sales and profitability targets, while efficiently managing associated production and operational costs.




Key Responsibilities and Expectations:




· Farm/Asset Management. Manage a select number of properties in a specific region, and if applicable, collaborate with onsite or contracted Farm Managers to evaluate performance and identify and implement ways to improve operations and efficiencies to manage costs, increase yields, and deliver strong returns for our investors.




· Communication & Engagement. Act as the Green Spring Farms/Farmland LP representative with Tenants, investors, on-site Management Companies, contractors, and consultants. Prepare and present farm and or crop updates on a weekly, monthly, or annual basis as needed for Companywide reporting. Prepare written quarterly reports for Investor Reporting.




· Operational Assistance. Provide recommendations and analysis of capital projects, organic conversion, implementation of regenerative practices including carbon sequestering projects, soliciting quotes/bids, coordinating schedules, and set and managing expectations and deadlines with on-site managers and vendors.




· Farming Practices. Work in conjunction with onsite managers, Tenants and Management Companies to provide oversight of farming practices on properties in your area for both new permanent crop developments and mature plantings, row crops, or other practices including activities related to organic transition, soil health, land preparation, irrigation design and management, water rights management, planting, weed and pest control, training, pruning, fertility, crop protection and soil amendments.




· Financial Performance. Assist onsite Managers with the development and implementation of annual crop operating budgets, permanent crop development budgets, capital expenditure budgets, and revenue projections.

· Monitoring Operations: Visit all properties often enough on a consistent basis to monitor operations and ensure timely and efficient execution of farming practices, and schedule monthly review of expenses compared to budgets. Review and approve invoices from on-site managers or operations as needed.

· Crop Planning & Marketing: In conjunction with senior and farm management, and sales personnel, prepare seasonal and long-term plans for organic conversion and crop rotations ensuring sustainable, regenerative agricultural practices and profitable financial performance. Assist in developing and procuring marketing strategies and opportunities for our crops




· Irrigation and Water Rights. Manage and direct the company’s and tenant irrigation activities to ensure all crops are supplied with water as needed in a cost effective, precise, and timely manner. Keep accurate records of timing and application amounts, and methods of water applications.

In conjunction with the company’s Resource Manager, ensure that all water rights are utilized and maintained over time.



· Information Management. Maintain accurate and timely crops, field work, irrigation, and fertilizer and chemical application records in AgWorld in partnership with the company’s Resource Manager. Manage farming and harvest activities to capture yield per acre and cost per acre by farm and field. Supply accounting with timely and accurate crop yield information.



· Lease & Tenant Management. Procure Tenants, as needed, and serve as the primary contact with the company’s tenants and write lease agreements as needed.




· Regulatory Compliance . Understand and ensure compliance and reporting requirements with Local, State and Federal laws governing farming operations including environmental regulations, food safety, water use, labor laws, and organic certification.



· Property & Facilities Maintenance. Maintain all properties and facilities, including ditches, farm and field perimeters including fence lines to ensure they are safe, well maintained, weed free, and meet legal standards.




· Acquisitions and Opportunities. Assist with due diligence of potential property acquisitions including assessment of site suitability, water rights and quality, soil and crop health, and marketing options.




· Other duties as assigned.




Reporting Requirements:




· Reports to the General Manager and Farmland LP Management.

Qualifications:




· Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Science, Ag Business, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.

· Minimum of 5 years’ experience in managing crop production, preferably almonds, blueberries, or similar.

· Experience in regenerative, organic production and transition.

· Functional Spanish Language skills

· Pest Control Advisor, Certified Crop Advisor, or Qualified Applicators License is preferred.

· Basic understanding of creating operational and development budgeting processes.

· Working knowledge of Microsoft operating systems including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
