The role involves developing models to predict energy performance, analyzing large datasets, and contributing to research projects aimed at improving building energy efficiency. Candidates should have a degree in a relevant field, programming skills, and a strong interest in sustainability. The position offers growth potential and requires effective communication and independent work skills.
Building Energy Analysis Engineer job at Massachusetts Clean Energy. Brookline, MA.

The Fraunhofer USA Center for Manufacturing Innovation CMI in Boston, MA is part of Fraunhofer USA, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit contract R&D organization. The Energy Systems team, located in Boston, MA , solves challenging applied research problems for the sustainable energy community. Our team of scientists and engineers works in partnership with clients ranging from the Federal Government and established companies to start-ups to develop, pilot, and validate technologies in the areas of building energy systems and grid-integration of renewables.
The Energy Systems team acquires and analyzes novel data sources to derive insights into building energy performance. In particular, we lead several federally-funded RD&D projects that leverage emerging data streams (e.g., from communicating thermostats and boilers, whole-building and sub-metered/disaggregated electric power) to: 1) forecast electrical loads and their flexibility; 2) identify energy-wasting faults and performance optimization opportunities; and 3) evaluate the real-world performance of building technologies. Ultimately, this work supports the transition to a sustainable energy future by reducing building energy consumption while enabling the electric grid to accommodate large quantities of renewable electricity and new demand from the electrification of space and water heating and transportation.
Job Duties/Responsibilities We seek a motivated team member to develop, test, and evaluate models and algorithms to predict the real-world energy performance of building equipment and systems, and to help acquire and analyze large datasets. You will also contribute to new project proposals, as well as publication in top-tier journals and conferences. This position has a high degree of growth potential and is an excellent opportunity for a talented analytically inclined engineer with strong interest in sustainability to address challenging and impactful problems.
Apply data-driven techniques and physics-based analysis to model the energy performance of building equipment and systems.
Acquire, analyze, and evaluate data from field tests to evaluate the real-world energy performance of buildings and building technologies.
Develop and specify custom data acquisition solutions to support data collection.
Co-author reports and research papers that effectively communicate research findings to different audiences, as well as government and industrial proposals.
Qualifications Undergraduate or advanced degree in building science, engineering physics, mechanical engineering, or a similar field.
Experience with programming (e.g., Python, MATLAB).
Strong interest in learning/applying analytical techniques to “noisy” real-world problems.
Enthusiasm and aptitude for working with data and designing, building, troubleshooting, and testing data acquisition systems.
Experience with databases and multi-GB datasets a plus.
Experience with Building Energy Systems strongly preferred.
Strong verbal and written communication skills and good interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively independently with limited oversight.
How to Apply In your cover letter, please explain what motivates you to apply and succinctly describe your most relevant work experience. Applications lacking a cover letter may not be seriously considered.
