Description

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries’ Inland Fisheries Hatchery System is seeking a Biologist Supervisor to lead and coordinate sport fish production at four facilities: Booker Fowler and Beechwood Fish Hatcheries (Forest Hill), Monroe Fish Hatchery (Monroe), and Huey P. Long Fish Hatchery (Lacombe).

Based in Forest Hill at the Booker Fowler Fish Hatchery, the Biologist Supervisor oversees freshwater sport fish production, stocking, facility and equipment operations, and maintenance. The role requires hands-on leadership, technical expertise, and public engagement to support fisheries management and outreach initiatives.

Responsibilities
• Assign and oversee daily fish culture and grounds maintenance activities, including fish care, feeding, handling, production, estimating populations, sampling, transport, stocking, pond care, fertilising, water quality monitoring, harvesting, and supply procurement.
• Assist Biologist Manager in identifying equipment and grounds maintenance needs.
• Stay informed on advancements in fisheries biology, management, and fish culture, and apply new techniques and regulations.
• Respond quickly to hatchery operational challenges such as equipment breakdowns, power outages, and changing biochemical conditions.
• Supervise four staff members, track performance, mediate conflicts, and distribute assignments fairly.
• Assist in preparing reports and purchase specifications for hatchery equipment; meet paperwork and reporting deadlines.
• Conduct hatchery tours and support Fisheries Outreach & Education events.
• Communicate with and educate the public about hatcheries and private pond management.

Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in an approved field plus four years of relevant experience; OR
• Non-thesis master’s degree plus three years of relevant experience; OR
• Master’s degree with thesis or doctorate plus two years of relevant experience.

• Appointment types may include Probational, Promotional, Job Appointment, or Detail to Special Duty.
