The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Office of Fisheries, is seeking a Marine Fisheries Biologist to serve as a Coastal Study Area Biologist domiciled in Orleans Parish. The postholder supports the collection of fishery-independent and fishery-dependent data from assigned sampling programmes, with a focus on ensuring the sustainable management of Louisiana’s aquatic resources for present and future generations.


Field responsibilities include conducting sampling activities using common fishery-independent gear such as gill nets, trammel nets, seines, trawls, and oyster dredges; identifying, measuring, and recording estuarine and marine finfish and shellfish species at various life stages; and operating and maintaining outboard-powered vessels and sampling equipment. The postholder also enters and reviews field data, compiles and analyses data, prepares reports, and assists in the development of aquatic habitat restoration projects. Additional duties include responding to public and media enquiries, presenting resource management information to commercial, recreational, and conservation groups, and representing the department to relevant agencies and contacts.


Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources. The position may be filled at Biologist 1, 2, or 3 level depending on qualifications and experience.
