Bay Nature General Assignment Reporter fellowship application 2026
Bay Nature (baynature.org) has a reporting fellowship for someone seeking reporting and writing experience covering the environment and climate change in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Bay Nature is an award-winning consumer print magazine and website that covers environmental issues and the natural sciences in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. We are a small, independent nonprofit media organization that has been publishing since 2001, and we are a member of the Institute for Nonprofit News. There are four of us in the newsroom and numerous contractors and freelancers.
For this full-time, one-year fellowship, you’ll further develop your general reporting and writing, data reporting, magazine fact-checking, and WordPress skills, as well as learn about and spend time in the natural and human-built landscapes of the Bay Area. A key focus will be climate change science and adaptation. You’ll leave your year here with a range of published articles—from short news pieces to long enterprise features—and with contacts, insight, and experience that will prepare you to continue to report and write about the environment.
We are looking for candidates with a background, experiences, or identity that complement or enhance the organization's existing diversity of perspectives. Preference will be given to candidates living in or with first-hand knowledge of the greater San Francisco Bay Area; demonstrable experience in journalistic writing; demonstrable experience or interest in environmental science. We also value skills in investigative and data reporting.
The deadline to apply for our General Assignment Reporter fellowship is March 16, 2026. We will review and contact applicants after the deadline.
This is a writing position, so we are looking for original, snappy writing in your application; do not use AI to write your application.
The fellowship will begin July 1, 2026.
The one-year position pays $50,000 for the year with health benefits, paid vacation, and sick leave. This is not a remote position. It is full-time and requires two days a week, 9 am to 5 pm, in the Bay Nature office in West Berkeley.
We look forward to your application.
