Job Description

The University of Hawai'i is seeking an Assistant Professor in Paleoclimatology to conduct research, teach, and promote Indigenous values and diversity. The candidate should have a doctorate, strong research and teaching skills, and a commitment to inclusivity. Job Summary:

We are seeking a distinguished academic with expertise in climate variability and change to join our team at the University of Hawaii. The successful candidate will have a strong research program, excellent teaching skills, and a commitment to promoting Indigenous values and perspectives as well as diversity and inclusivity.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Conduct research or undertake comparable scholarly activity and establish an externally funded and nationally recognized research program.
• Supervise independent study activities and off-campus learning such as practicums and internships.
• Serve as academic advisor to students.
• Participate on committees in charge of candidates for advanced degrees.
• Conduct assigned courses or seminar.
• Serve on University committees.
• Participate in curriculum development activities including the development of curricular materials and special instructional methods.
• Rend service to the professional or lay community which is relevant to the individual's academic specialty.
• Engage with faculty, staff, and students in a collaborative fashion that supports Indigenous values and perspectives as well as diversity and inclusivity.
• Perform related tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
• A doctorate (at the time of appointment) from a college or university of recognized standing and in a field relevant to the position.
• Demonstrated scholarly achievement.
• Demonstrated excellence in professional written and oral communication. Examples include, but are not limited to, publications in peer reviewed scientific journals, technical reports, public-focused communications, and presentations at professional meetings.
• Ability to establish an extramurally funded research program.
• Expertise in producing records of climate variability and change that enhance our understanding of past, present and future climate change and improves projections from climate simulations.
• Demonstrated ability as a teacher
• Ability and interest in fostering participation of underrepresented groups, working with people of diverse perspectives and experiences, and supporting Indigenous approaches, values, and knowledge with respect and cultural sensitivity.
• Expressed interest in a future research and teaching program that contributes to the UH mission of becoming a Native Hawaiian place of Learning.
• Qualities (ability to work collaboratively, proactively, reliably, with good interpersonal communication skills) and motivation for promoting a positive and supportive work environment among students, staff, and faculty that supports Indigenous values and perspectives as well as diversity and inclusivity.
• Poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others.
• Demonstrated achievement of creative, high-quality research and the potential for scientific leadership including making transformative advances in the field.
• Demonstrated capacity for excellence in teaching and mentoring, including creative approaches for enhancing student learning, and engaging students in research
Desirable Qualifications:
• Record of extramural research funding or leadership in paleoclimate research programs.
• Record of excellence in teaching and mentoring, including creative approaches for enhancing student learning.
• Expertise and desire to teach courses in environmental Earth sciences at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
• Record of nationally or internationally recognized research accomplishments.
• Expressed interest in scientific endeavors relevant to Hawaii and the Pacific region.
• Expertise and ability to relate their scholarly activities to recent climate change, potential mitigation strategies, coupled human and natural systems or other societal implications of their work.
• Expertise in research that focuses on the water cycle and implications for forecasting water resources, on interconnections across terrestrial and marine environments, paleoclimate perspectives on climate dynamics and natural variability, and/or the detection of climate hazards and ecological change.
• Expertise in using paleoclimate data to formally evaluate climate model simulations.
• Research skills and interests that complement and enhance the research activities in Earth Sciences and other units at University of Hawaii as well as State and Federal agencies in Hawaii.
