Description
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources supports conservation and management of the state’s natural resources through science-based research. This position is based within the Marine Resources Research Institute, contributing to shellfish and coastal ecosystem studies.
The role focuses on molluscan ecology, oyster reef mapping, restoration, and aquaculture. The position combines laboratory and field research with data analysis, project coordination, and scientific communication to support coastal resource management.
Responsibilities
Conduct laboratory and field research on molluscan ecology and oyster reef systems
Collect biological samples and manage associated datasets
Analyze ecological data and support interpretation of research findings
Prepare technical reports, presentations, and scientific manuscripts
Author peer-reviewed publications
Coordinate and supervise research team personnel
Develop research proposals and manage project budgets
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on coastal research projects
Minimum Requirements
Ph.D. in a field related to marine science or ecology
Demonstrated writing ability through at least one peer-reviewed publication
Strong analytical and research skills
Ability to conduct fieldwork and laboratory-based research
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. in biology, marine science, or closely related field
Experience in molluscan ecological research and experimental design
Experience with estuarine and tidal creek environments
Knowledge of South Carolina oyster reef ecology
Experience with population and community ecological analyses
Record of scientific publications and grant funding
Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
Ability to operate small vessels in inshore waters
Ability to swim and perform physically demanding fieldwork

Location: Charleston County, South Carolina
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM
Full-time position within the Marine Resources Division
