Job Title: Fisheries Extension Faculty

The University of Hawai'i Sea Grant College Program seeks a Fisheries Extension Faculty to serve in Hawai'i and the Pacific Region. This role is pivotal in connecting scientific research with local fishing communities and stakeholders, facilitating knowledge transfer, and fostering sustainable fisheries management practices.

Description:

The successful candidate will play a vital role in advancing the understanding of subtropical and tropical fisheries of the Pacific. They will develop, implement, and lead educational programs, workshops, and training sessions for fishers, fisheries managers, and community stakeholders across Hawai'i and the Pacific Region. These programs should focus on sustainable fishing practices, resource management, and compliance with local and federal regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Develop, implement, and lead educational programs, workshops, and training sessions for fishers, fisheries managers, and community stakeholders.
• Collaborate with regional partners to integrate extension methodologies in applied research projects addressing critical issues in Pacific fisheries.
• Provide technical expertise and guidance to fishers, seafood businesses, and other stakeholders on adopting best practices, adopting innovative technologies, and enhancing business sustainability within the fisheries sector.
• Cultivate strong relationships with local fishing communities, indigenous groups, and relevant stakeholders to understand their unique needs and challenges.
• Collect and analyze fisheries-related data, such as catch and effort data, to inform management and policy decisions, assess the health of fisheries, and support sustainable practices.
• Seek external funding opportunities and grants to support extension activities, applied research, and regional initiatives.

Requirements:
• A Master's degree from a college or university of recognized standing, with major work in fisheries science, marine biology or related fields.
• At least three (3) years of successful experience in Cooperative Extension work, Sea Grant Extension work or equivalent in closely related fields.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment and to assume responsibility for developing an Extension program.

Desirable Qualifications:
• PhD from a college or university of recognized standing with major work in fisheries science, marine biology, or a related field.
• In-depth knowledge of Pacific fisheries, marine ecosystems, and the unique challenges faced by fisheries in the Pacific Region.
• Proven experience in conducting applied research and fieldwork in fisheries.
• Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
