Position Overview
All Habitat Services is seeking a motivated Aquatic Field Technician to join our aquatic restoration team. This position offers hands-on experience in aquatic ecosystem management, invasive species control, and field-based environmental work.
Technicians work closely with the Aquatics Project Manager and Crew Leader to perform aquatic vegetation treatments, monitoring, and habitat restoration activities on a variety of water bodies. This is an excellent opportunity for students, recent graduates, or individuals seeking practical field experience in environmental science, ecology, or natural resource management.
About the Work
This is an active, outdoor position working on lakes, ponds, and wetlands throughout Connecticut. Field Technicians spend most of their time on the water or at shoreline sites operating boats, conducting aquatic vegetation management/surveys, water quality monitoring, and handling any client/public interactions in the field. Workdays begin at 7 a.m. at the company shop before traveling to field sites with the project team. Candidates must be willing to work overtime hours as needed during peak field operations, or weather-dependent scheduling.
Key Responsibilities
Perform aquatic vegetation management treatments including the application of algaecides, herbicides, and biological controlsConduct mechanical and manual removal of aquatic vegetationAssist with lake and pond management operations using boats and field equipmentPrepare equipment, treatment materials, and vehicles prior to daily field assignmentsMix, handle, and apply treatment chemicals according to company and regulatory protocolsMaintain accurate daily field logs and treatment recordsCommunicate project updates, observations, and field issues to the Crew Leader / Project ManagerSupport safe field operations and follow all safety proceduresMaintain professional interactions with clients and project stakeholders
Education
Bachelors degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, or a related field, orMinimum 2 years of relevant field experience
Required Skills and Experience
Strong interest in aquatic ecology, habitat restoration, or invasive species managementAbility to follow established procedures and operational protocolsCommitment to workplace health and safety guidelinesStrong attention to detail and accuracyReliable follow-through on assigned responsibilitiesEffective verbal and written communication skillsAbility to work independently and as part of a field teamPreferred Qualifications
Boat operation experienceAbility to drive a pickup truck and tow trailersExperience using multi-parameter biological instrumentsGIS experienceExperience using GPS softwarePrior aquatic vegetation management experience
Licensing Requirements
Required at Hire
Valid drivers license with an acceptable driving recordMust be 18 years or older
Must Obtain After Hire (company will assist)
Connecticut Safe Boating CertificateConnecticut Commercial Pesticide Junior Operator CertificateOSHA 10-Hour Certification
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
This position involves active outdoor work and may require:
Standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crouching for extended periodsWorking in aquatic environments and varying weather conditionsOperating boats, trucks, and field equipmentLifting and carrying equipment up to 65 pounds
