Job Description

Johnson County Community College is hiring a part-time Zero Waste Associate in Lenexa, KS, to support recycling, composting, and waste diversion efforts aimed at achieving a zero-waste campus. Responsibilities include daily recycling and compost pickups, training interns, and maintaining waste management equipment. The role requires a high school diploma, problem-solving skills, and the ability to lift heavy materials. Pay ranges from $15.00 to $16.43 per hour.

Work Schedule, Hours per week: Varies, 20 hours per
week

Pay Range: $15.00-$16.43 and determined based on relevant
years of work experience.

Position Summary: Perform the necessary work to support the
recycling, composting, and other waste diversion programs to drive
the Johnson County Community College (JCCC) goal to become a
zero-waste campus where the diversion of materials from reaching
the landfill is at or beyond 90%.

Required Qualifications: High school diploma or
equivalent.

Strong problem solving/troubleshooting skills.

Understand and relate effectively to diverse groups including
faculty, students, administrators, supervisors, support staff, and
contractors in order to translate college’s sustainability
requirements into operational terms.

Ability to conduct duties in a friendly, discreet and professional
manner.

Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as accept
direction on given assignments, and delegate work to student
staff.

Valid driver’s license and ability to pass MVR along with
background check. Become forklift certified within 3 months at
employers expense

Travel required within local area and on campus using campus
vehicles.

The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 150 pounds with
the use of designated moving equipment and/or other
assistance.

Preferred Qualifications: Understanding of sustainability as
it relates to materials management and life cycle analysis. Basic
hand tool use, power tools such as drills or saws.

Position Details: Job duties include but are not limited
to:
• Perform the college’s daily scheduled recycling and compost
pick-ups from material hubs and distribute to proper locations to
achieve zero waste goals.
• Train and lead Sustainability Interns in a manner that educates
and develops future career skills.
• Operate and maintain the college’s recycling and composting
facilities and equipment in an orderly and safe manner.
• Record collected material weights and document
collections.
• Assist with maintenance, upkeep, and inventory of all zero
waste management equipment.
• Provide support for JCCC sustainability events as needed.
• Build relationships and perform outreach activities to JCCC's
surrounding campus community and other recycling offices.
• Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity,
may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of
management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.
Scheduling, shift assignments and work location may be changed at
any time, as required by business necessity.
