Job Description

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is hiring seasonal Watercraft Inspection and Decontamination Technicians for a position at Strawberry Reservoir from May 16 to Sept. 1, 2025. Responsibilities include educating boaters about aquatic invasive species, inspecting watercraft, and decontaminating equipment. Applicants must be 18+, possess a valid Utah driver's license, and work flexible hours, including weekends. Housing is not provided, and preference is given to those with relevant experience or education.

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has seasonal positions (no benefits) available at Daniel’s Port of Entry at Strawberry Reservoir. This appointment will last from approximately May 16 to Sept. 1, 2025, with the possibility of an extension. Housing is not provided.

Examples of duties

As a member of a team of technicians, the successful applicant will aid in implementing the Utah Aquatic Invasive Species Management Plan, with particular attention given to preventing the spread of quagga and zebra mussels in Utah’s waterways. A large portion of the job is in outreach and communication, by which boaters will be educated about quagga mussels and what their role is in fighting this threat.

Duties will include interviewing boaters and educating them about the threat of Aquatic Invasive Species, data collection and entry, inspecting boats for the presence of AIS or standing water, assessing the biological risk that watercraft may pose on Utah’s waters and decontaminating boats and equipment with a hot water/high-volume sprayer.

Job requirements and skills

Applicant must be 18 years of age or older and have a valid Utah driver’s license at the time of employment. Applicant must be willing to work a flexible schedule, with weekends and holidays (e.g., Memorial Day, Fourth of July, July 24, Labor Day, etc.) mandatory. Applicant must be self-motivated, honest, able and willing to work outdoors in harsh weather conditions. Applicant must be able to work alone and as a contributing member of a team.

Preference may be given to “watercraft-savvy” applicants, with an understanding of boat types and internal water systems (ballast tanks, live wells, cooling systems, etc.), or those who are pursuing a degree in biology, fisheries, natural resources or criminal justice. Basic mechanical aptitude is helpful. Applicants who live in or near the Heber City area (or who can arrange such housing) will be given additional preference.
