Pharmavise Corporation is seeking a Senior Packaging Sustainability Engineer for an onsite role in Minnetonka, MN. The engineer will focus on sustainable development and analysis of medical device packaging, collaborating with various teams and external suppliers. Responsibilities include project participation, performance verification, lifecycle assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives. Candidates should have a relevant degree and at least 7 years of packaging engineering experience, particularly in the medical device sector.
Position: Senior Packaging Sustainability Engineer — Medical Device (Onsite — Minnetonka, MN) Contract
Our Fortune 500 Medical Device client has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Packaging Sustainability Engineer.
Job Summary:
The Senior Packaging Sustainability Engineer is responsible for the sustainable development and analysis of packaging, products, materials, processes, or equipment for medical devices. Under limited supervision/guidance, compiles, analyzes, and reports operational, test, and research data to establish sustainable performance standards for newly designed or modified packaging, products, processes, or materials.
Responsibilities:
• Participate fully and contribute to project teams on activities related to sustainability, including packaging/product design and development, material testing, specification preparation, process capability studies, report writing, and documentation.
• Ensure proposed sustainable packaging design changes are systematically analyzed with proper justification and data collection for performance verification.
• Plan and schedule activities independently to meet project timelines.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with teams such as environmental, project management, quality, R&D, manufacturing, regulatory, operations, and marketing to ensure project success.
• Work with external suppliers to design, qualify, and procure packaging components, including knowledge of sustainable packaging materials.
• Complete packaging testing and bench studies for design improvements.
• Participate in resource planning and support onboarding of new team members for due diligence and integration activities.
• Generate packaging documentation, including test protocols and reports.
• Develop lifecycle assessments and reports, understanding circular economy and eco-design principles.
• Perform root cause analysis related to design, material, or process failures.
• Summarize and analyze test results, drawing conclusions.
• Design, procure, and fabricate tooling and fixtures.
• Train technicians or operators on new processes or test procedures as applicable.
• Identify areas for continuous sustainable improvement and execute related projects.
• Plan and execute packaging redesign projects impacting cost of goods.
• Stay updated on new technologies and advances in packaging industries.Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor's Degree in Packaging, Sustainability, or Engineering discipline.
• Experience with sustainability assessments or packaging optimization projects.
• Strong knowledge of packaging sustainability standards, LCA tools (e.g., Sima Pro, GaBi), and eco-design principles.
• Understanding of global regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA, EU Packaging Directive).
• Experience in the medical device, pharmaceutical, or similar industry.
• Minimum 7 years of packaging engineering experience with related equipment and materials.
• Proficiency with MS Office applications.
• Ability to work independently to meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor's Degree in Packaging Engineering.
• Experience with supply chain and distribution.
• Over 7 years of packaging engineering experience, preferably in medical devices.
• Knowledge of paperboard, corrugated, flexible films, Tyvek, thermoformed trays, and injection molded parts.
• Training in LCA or carbon accounting.
• Proven ability to drive material reduction, recyclability, or reuse initiatives.
• Knowledge of supply chain and end-of-life considerations in packaging design.
• Familiarity with ASTM and ISTA testing requirements.
• Experience with packaging process and equipment qualification.
• Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

40 hours/week
• Work Setup:
Onsite in Minnetonka, MN (5 days/week)
• Contract Length: 12 months
