Job Description

Lighthouse Games is seeking a Senior Environment Artist to create high-quality environments in a collaborative, hybrid setting. Responsibilities include developing terrain, collaborating with various teams, mentoring junior artists, and ensuring visual and gameplay standards. Candidates should have experience shipping games, expertise in terrain workflows using tools like Houdini and Gaea, and strong knowledge of Unreal Engine. This position is based in Royal Leamington Spa, United Kingdom.

As aSenior Environment Artist, working with the Lead Environment Artist and the wider art team, you will be responsible for ensuring the worlds we create delight players with the highest quality visuals, providing the backdrop for memorable experiences. You have a strong eye for detail and composition, enabling you to craft believable environments, and you take pride in both your own work and that of your team. You will help uphold quality by supporting and mentoring the environment art team, fostering a healthy culture where everyone can excel.


Key Duties Include

Create and Implement High-Quality Environments
Develop high-quality environment content with a particular focus on terrain, geology, and natural landscapes, using a combination of procedural and handcrafted techniques aligned with the game’s artistic vision and technical constraints



Own Terrain & Landscape Workflows
Create and refine terrain using heightfield-based workflows across tools such as Houdini and Gaea, generating masks and data that drive believable, scalable world building



Collaborate Across Disciplines
Work closely with the Art Leads, Game Designers, and Technical Artists to ensure environments are visually compelling, gameplay-optimised, and meet performance targets



Leverage Advanced Tools and Techniques
Utilise Houdini and Gaea for terrain generation, mask creation and geology scatters, Substance Designer to process masks and develop supporting textures, and Unreal Engine for landscape sculpting and material/shader setup



Mentor and Guide the Environment Art Team
Provide leadership and mentorship to junior and mid-level artists, maintaining high-quality standards and fostering a culture of creativity and excellence



Contribute to Reviews and Feedback
Participate in critiques and reviews of environment art, offering constructive feedback to ensure work meets both artistic and gameplay requirements




Requirements

Shipped Games
Proven experience shipping at least one major game title as a Senior Environment Artist



Terrain & Procedural Workflow Expertise
Strong experience building terrain using heightfield workflows, including generating and utilising masks within Houdini and/or Gaea to drive large-scale environment creation



Tool Proficiency
Experience with Houdini and Gaea for terrain generation, Substance Designer for processing masks and creating supporting textures, and Unreal Engine for landscape sculpting and basic material/shader setup



Game Engine Expertise
Strong experience with Unreal Engine, with a focus on environment integration, terrain workflows, and optimisation



Artistic and Design Fundamentals
Strong understanding of shape, form, composition, and visual storytelling principles to build compelling and believable worlds



Collaboration and Leadership
Excellent communication skills, with experience mentoring others and working effectively across disciplines




Desirable

Unreal Engine Expertise
Experience with Unreal Engine 4 or 5, including PCG and more advanced material workflows



Large-Scale World Experience
Experience building expansive, open-world environments using procedural terrain pipelines



Photogrammetry
Experience in capturing, processing, and integrating terrain and geological assets using photogrammetry alongside procedural workflows
