This position participates in a Career Progression Group (CPG) and may be filled as a Sanitarian 1, 2, or 3. The level at which the vacancy is filled will be determined by the qualifications of the candidate selected. This position provides the opportunity to advance within this job series. The actual starting salary depends on the education and experience of the selected applicant.

Sanitarian 1: Special Entrance Rate (SER) Salary starting for Sanitarian 1 is $19.36 hourly / $1,548.80
• Either of the following will qualify:
o A baccalaureate degree with a major in environmental health.
o A baccalaureate degree with 30 semester hours of specialized science coursework, to
include at least six hours in chemistry or physics, ten hours in biological sciences, and an
additional fourteen hours in any combination of chemistry, physics, or biological
sciences.
Sanitarian 2: Special Entrance Rate (SER) Salary starting for Sanitarian 2 is $20.72 hourly / $1,657.60 bi-weekly.
• Differs from Sanitarian 1 by responsibility for independent performance of investigations and
possession of a valid Sanitarian's license.
• Differs from Sanitarian 3 by the absence of lead worker responsibility and the level of
supervision received. Also, the absence of responsibility for tasks of a complex nature.
Sanitarian 3: Special Entrance Rate (SER) Salary starting for Sanitarian 3 is $22.90 hourly / $1,832.00 bi-weekly.
• Differs from Sanitarian 2 by responsibility for acting as a lead worker with project or functional
supervision over lower level Sanitarians, or the principle assistant to a Sanitarian 4 or 5,or the
performance of tasks of a complex nature.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a temporary permit issued by the Louisiana State Board of Examiners for Sanitarians plus one of the following:
A bachelor’s degree in environmental health; OR
A bachelor’s degree with 30 semester hours of specialized science coursework, to include at least six hours in chemistry or physics, ten hours in biological sciences, and an additional fourteen hours in any combination of chemistry, physics, or biological sciences.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in the Molluscan Shellfish program require that applicants complete the Louisiana Boating Education program and be certified by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
NOTE:
Acceptable coursework in biological sciences (as defined by the Louisiana State Board of Examiners for Sanitarians) include but are not limited to biology, entomology, microbiology, zoology, and such applied sciences as animal husbandry, dairy husbandry, environmental sciences, environmental engineering, and veterinary science.
Function of Work:
To train as a Public Health Sanitarian responsible for inspection, investigation, permitting, licensing, and assisting in the enforcement activities of multiple public health environmental and consumer protection programs.

Close from a higher level Sanitarian.

Job Distinctions:
Differs from Sanitarian 2 by the absence of independent responsibility for entry level investigations and possession of a permanent license.
The primary function of this level is to receive the necessary training and experience to prepare for the responsibility of higher levels. The focus is on formal and on the job training in multiple public health environmental and consumer protection programs.Under close and immediate supervision, performs the following duties with progressive independence as ability is demonstrated and experience is gained.
Reviews permit applications for individual sewerage disposal systems, retail food establishments, and institutions or modifications to existing permits.
Conducts investigations to determine compliance with State and Federal laws and regulations and the State Sanitary Code.
Conducts routine inspections of permitted establishments and permitted sewerage systems.
Participates and/or assists in enforcement actions.
Assists in conducting on-site inspections of existing or proposed waste water discharges from facilities such as car washes, sewage treatment facilities, etc. onto highway right-of-ways.
Investigates complaints from the public regarding unsanitary conditions, insect and rodent infestations, food-borne illness, etc. and recommends any necessary corrective measures.
Participates in emergency response activities.
Collects drinking water, sewage effluent, and food samples for analysis.
Performs related work as assigned.
