Kairos Power is seeking a Reliability Engineering Intern for Summer 2025 in Albuquerque, NM. Company Overview

Kairos Power is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world’s transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal to dramatically improve people’s quality of life while protecting the environment. This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.

Job Summary

Kairos Power is seeking a highly motivated Reliability Engineering intern to execute hazard evaluations supporting the design and operation of near-term nuclear and non-nuclear hardware demonstration projects. The Reliability Engineering intern will work in close consultation with mechanical, electrical, I&C, testing, manufacturing, and licensing engineering staff to collect operating experience from the Kairos development program and to conduct traditional hazard evaluations such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA). In this role, you will contribute to the engineering design and technology development programs for the demonstration and commercialization of the KP-FHR.

Responsibilities
• Develops and uses models for qualification of system and component reliability, using FMEA, ETA, and other methods as appropriate.
• Assists Kairos hardware technology development by capturing and disseminating operating experience
• Coordinates closely and collaborates effectively with other individuals and teams regarding analytical methods development, implementation, and integration of nuclear safety, design, and licensing
• Supports continuous improvement efforts that improve automation of analysis and documentation work products
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
• Currently enrolled and pursuing a BS or MS degree in Nuclear Engineering, Reliability, Mechanical, Materials, Chemical Engineering or equivalent.
• Experience with data analysis/automation and ability to develop further experience in R, RMarkdown, Python, git, LaTeX, Bash/Shell/Batch scripting, Docker, VS Code, GitHub, etc.
• Proven team player with excellent verbal and written communication/presentation.
• Deep experience using R, RMarkdown, git, LaTeX, Bash/Shell/Batch scripting preferred
• Hands-on experience with hardware design, fabrication, assembly, or testing preferred
• Experience with qualitative and quantitative hazard evaluation (e.g. HAZOPs, FMEA, FTA, ETA) preferred

Physical Conditions
• Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, scissor lifts, articulated boom lifts and the like
• Setting up and transferring temporary structures (e.g. scaffolding, ladders)
• Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces
• Remaining in a stationary position, often standing, or sitting for prolonged periods
• Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
• Adjusting, moving, transporting, installing, positioning, or removing objects up to 25 pounds in all directions
• Communicating with others to exchange information
• Use hand tools
• Repetitive assembly operations of manufacturing test fixtures and test setups in collaboration with engineering and manufacturing teams

• Accessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned
• High-concentration, demanding and fast-paced

Safety and PPE
• Reading and interpreting hazardous warning signs
• Reporting issues with equipment or unsafe conditions
• Wearing proper PPE, to include face mask, face shields, gloves, safety shoes

The hourly range for this position is $30-32 for employees working onsite at our Alameda, CA headquarters. The range provided in this job posting represents the typical range or starting rate of candidates hired in California.
