Job Description
Invenergy is seeking a Principal Engineer for Operations Engineering in Chicago, IL. The role involves troubleshooting and analyzing Energy Storage facilities, providing technical support, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. Candidates should have a degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, with 8-10+ years of experience in engineering or technical support. Preferred skills include experience with SCADA systems and energy storage technologies. Salary ranges from $130,000 to $160,000 USD.

Job Description
Position Overview
As an Operations Engineer you will be responsible for operation, troubleshooting, and analysis of Invenergy’s Energy Storage facilities.
Responsibilities
• Provide engineering support for the day-to-day operations of the Invenergy Storage fleet
• Provide rapid technical support for field issues, balancing multiple high-priority escalations.
• Diagnose issues with and troubleshoot technical systems on sites, including Battery Management Systems (BMS), Energy Management Systems (EMS), and Power Plant Controllers (PPC).
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Field ops, SCADA, operations engineering) to resolve complex technical challenges.
• Lead root cause investigations and implement corrective actions for system anomalies.
• Create and maintain technical documentation to standardize troubleshooting and system setup
• Integrate Energy Storage system process and procedures with the Invenergy Control Center and SCADA teams for operations
• Work and evaluate technology with suppliers of components used in Energy Storage Systems including battery manufacturers, battery management systems, inverter suppliers, SCADA, and HVAC systems
• Debugging system networking, firewall policies, Modbus control, and communication paths
• Onboard new storage projects into operating fleet
• Develop and maintain automation tools to streamline diagnostics, log analysis, and system updates.
Required Qualifications
• Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent experience)
• 8 - 10+ years of experience in engineering, systems integration, or technical support role, or 6 - 8+ years of experience with and advanced Degree
• Experience with SCADA systems, energy storage technologies, and industrial control systems
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Eligible to work in the United States without the need for employer visa sponsorship now or in the future.
Preferred Skills
• Energy Storage specific experience with: Power Conversion Systems (SMA, Power Electronics, TMEIC); HMI Platforms (Fluence, Inductive Automation Ignition, Powin Kobold, SEL RTAC)
• Experience with Powin StackOS EMS
• Proficiency in Python, shell scripting, and network diagnostics tools (e.g., Wireshark, Modpoll)
• Power Plant Control (PPC) Systems for renewable energy including multi-plant coordinate control
• Experience with industrial protocols (DNP3, Modbus, OPC, SEL FM)
• Understanding of Electrical Safety Practices
Base Pay
$130,000 - $160,000 USD
Bonus 35%
The base pay range reflects the minimum and maximum target salary for the position. Invenergy considers a number of factors when determining base pay offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education and skills.
