Manager, Climate and Environment (Zero Waste)

Vancouver Airport Authority seeks a Manager, Climate and Environment (Zero Waste) to lead efforts in achieving net-zero emissions by 2030. The role involves developing and executing the Zero Waste Strategy, mentoring a team, and managing environmental programs focused on sustainability. Key qualifications include 8 years of related experience and 3 years in a leadership role. This is a permanent, full-time position based in Vancouver, BC.

The Climate and Environment department is responsible for executing YVR’s Environmentalal Sustainability plan, including reducing our carbon emissions, increasing waste diversion, conserving water and protecting the ecosystem on Sea Island. We also execute YVR’s Noise Management Plan, balancing the need for safe, convenient 24-hour travel with enjoyable urban living.

Position Overview

We have a permanent, full-time opportunity for a Manager, Climate & Environment (Zero Waste). The Manager will be responsible for developing and executing Zero Waste Strategy in alignment with YVR’s Environmental Sustainability Plan and Strategic Plan and creating innovative new approaches to deliver on commitments and environmental targets.

Reporting to the Director, Climate and Environment, the successful candidate will be responsible for guiding and mentoring a team of environmental professionals in developing, implementing and innovating environmental and climate programs and strategies, focused on zero waste and circular economy, in line with achieving the organization’s strategic objectives, specifically to be a leader in sustainability.

Key responsibilities include:
• Providing support and direction to the Climate & Environment Team – this includes creating clarity and alignment, developing and empowering performance, fostering teamwork and collaboration, supporting people to embrace change and innovation, hiring, coaching, motivating and supporting developmental activities, and conducting formal evaluations.
• Creatively developing and implementing programs, as well as, managing budgets, projects and consultants.
• Monitoring, evaluating, improving and communicating the organization’s environmental sustainability and noise goals and results, through collaboration with airport colleagues and partners, with Musqueam under our Friendship & Sustainability Agreement, and with our geographic and industry communities.
• Leading and implementing programs, policy and projects related to zero waste, the environment and sustainability, including waste management, reducing carbon emissions and increasing energy efficiency, water quality and conservation, , environmental assessment, contaminated sites, ecosystem health and noise mitigation and management.

Key qualifications include:
• 8 years of recent, related progressive experience supplemented by a post-secondary degree in science, environmental studies, engineering or a related field and considerable experience working in an environmental management setting; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in a leadership role and managing a team.
• Extensive knowledge of federal, provincial, and local environmental legislation and general awareness of Indigenous protocols.
• Well-developed critical thinking skills with the ability to influence acceptance and implement creative and innovative solutions.
• Proven ability to deliver projects on time and on budget, manage consultants, and liaise with industry, government officials and the public.
• Excellent multi-tasking and time management skills, including the ability to juggle and reprioritize based on business demands and priorities.

Salary Range : $105,680 to $158,520 per annum, based on 37.5-hour work week. This is individually tailored to reflect your unique experience, qualifications and internal equity.
