Job Description

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is seeking an Indigenous Business Liaison in Brisbane, QLD. This role focuses on supporting Traditional Owner businesses through the Indigenous Business Connections project, enhancing their capacity, and fostering relationships with commercial operators. Candidates should have knowledge of Aboriginal issues, strong networking skills, and experience in mentoring Indigenous peoples. This position is exclusive to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander individuals.

Who we are

Indigenous Employment Pathways Section was established to create employment opportunities and recruit First Nations Australians to key positions that will continue to improve the capability of critical operations and to deliver leading environment, sustainable land management and cultural heritage practices. The Section works closely with Senior Leadership within Parks Australia to develop culturally safe practices when it comes to Employment and Business opportunities.

The Job

The Indigenous Business Liaison will play a key role in supporting the delivery of the Indigenous Business Connections project that is being delivered by the Indigenous Employment Pathways Team within Parks Australia. This role will support and engage with Traditional Owner businesses, both existing and emerging, across the three jointly managed parks (Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Booderee National Park and Kakadu National Park).
• Build relationships with commercial businesses and licenced operators to engage traditional owner business
• Support Traditional Owners to build capacity through a pilot business connections program including discuss business ideas, access feasibility assessments, participate in business planning, drafting funding applications, and business mentoring.
• Support Traditional Owners to engage in business workshops, forums and training with relevant service providers
• Contribute to monitoring, evaluation and reporting on Traditional Owner business development activities.

What we are looking for

We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate the following:

When responding to the Statement of Claims, we are looking for;
• Advanced knowledge of the issues and barriers faced by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, on a daily basis
• Knowledge of or the ability to gain quickly, policy and legislation requirements including the EPBC Act and Joint Management arrangements for the jointly managed National Parks.
• Strong networks and ability to build and maintain positive relationships.
• Demonstrated experience contributing as an effective team member, mentoring other people in the workplace, and an innovative understanding of strategies that provide assistance to Indigenous peoples in a remote area.
• Ability to adapt training materials and delivery methods to suit alternative learning styles and needs.
• Demonstrated ability and experience to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
• Experience in developing and maintaining positive relationships with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities. Please note the successful applicant must:
• Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license.
• Note that the physical requirements of the role involve a combination of outdoor and office-based work.
• Working with Vulnerable Peoples Check.

Desirable qualifications
• Hold or working towards a qualification in Business, Administration or Management.
• Ability to speak Pitjantjatjara and/or Yankunytjatjara (not mandatory, but desired).

Additional requirements
• Hold and maintain a valid Australian motor vehicle drivers licence.

• The ability to obtain and maintain a working with children and vulnerable people check.

Eligibility and other requirements

Citizenship - to be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.

Security Clearance - this position requires a Baseline Vetting security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

Pre-employment checks - your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where required a pre-employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation and a probation period.

Please note: this role will require regular travel to remote parts of Australia.
