Job Description
The Environmental Conservation Department is hiring two Fish and Wildlife Technicians in Long Island City, NY. Responsibilities include monitoring Peregrine falcon eyeries, conducting bird surveys, and assisting with amphibian and reptile population studies. The role requires fieldwork in challenging terrains and adverse weather. Minimum qualifications include 30 semester credit hours in relevant fields. This is a seasonal, part-time position with potential telecommuting options.
The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description Monitor Peregrine falcon eyeries and obtain recruitment data throughout the breeding season. Conduct point-count surveys for grassland bird inventories. Establish and maintain acoustic bat detectors throughout the region. Assist in breeding colonial waterbird counts. Aid in establishing waterfowl banding sites and in pre-season banding of mallards and American black ducks. Position 2, Amphibian and Reptile Diversity: (4/1/25 – 11/30/25)The field technician will be a part of a team working on population monitoring and habitat/life history description for the Atlantic Coast Leopard Frog (Lithobates [Rana] kauffeldi) to meet the goals of NYSDEC’s State Wildlife Action Plan. Duties of this technician include installation and maintenance of automated audio recording systems, identifying frog calls from recordings, capturing frogs and fitting them with radio transmitters, tracking frogs using radio telemetry, habitat assessment via water and vegetation sampling, data entry and organization, and other duties as deemed necessary. Work will take place in wetlands and require navigation through muddy terrain with thick vegetation. The technician must be able to work in rain and windy conditions. Other wildlife surveying may be required.
The minimum qualifications required for this vacancy. Minimum Qualifications Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.
Additional comments regarding the vacancy. Additional Comments This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 11/30/25. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview. Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.Must be able to work in remote areas.Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
