Job Description:
Maryland Environmental Service (MES) has an opening in the Environmental Dredging and Restoration Group for a full-time Environmental Specialist Trainee (EST) or an Environmental Specialist (ES). This position will include the selected candidate to perform seasonal field work (May- October) reporting to the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island (Poplar Island), located in the Chesapeake Bay in Talbot County, Maryland. This position will also support the Mid-Chesapeake Bay Island Restoration Project at Barren and James Islands (Mid-Bay). Off season work (November through April) the selected candidate will report to MES Headquarters (HQ) in Millersville, MD. The selected candidate will support diamondback terrapin and other herpetofauna monitoring and report development, wildlife response, and vegetation and invasive management for Poplar Island. For Mid-Bay, the selected candidate will support tasks that include but are not limited to technical report development, data review, task management, regulatory coordination assistance, monitoring plan development assistance, and development of meeting summaries.

The chosen candidate will also need to periodically drive to visit field sites or labs to fulfill sampling/monitoring requirements. Poplar Island requires riding to and from the project site on a crew vessel and being able to work in various weather and field conditions. This position may also perform other environmental project-related tasks. Occasional evening and weekend work may be necessary. This position will require obtaining and maintaining a Maryland safe boater's license with regular boat operations to and from the site and pesticide applicator registration with Maryland Department of Agriculture following employment. Training is available.

Estimated Pay Range:

EST: $43,909.83 - $46,000.00

ES: $48,301.85 - $54,000.00

Minimum Requirements:

EST: bachelor's degree in environmental science, engineering, ecology, biology, chemistry, geology or a related field from an accredited college or university. Possession of a valid driver's license with less than five points and the ability to lift 50lbs.

ES: a bachelor's degree in environmental science, engineering, ecology, biology, chemistry, geology or a related field from an accredited college or university, plus one year of experience in environmental science, regulations, engineering or management. Possession of a valid driver's license with less than five points and the ability to lift 50lbs.

Preferred but not required skills:Firsthand experience with diamondback terrapin and/or other herpetofauna monitoring, preparing scientific and environmental technical reports, data management, natural resource planning, and task management. Knowledge of federal and state permits, financial management and chains of custody. Experience in invasive control including herbicide spraying, and wetland and upland plant identification. Fluent in MS Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and strong verbal skills. Additional experience in driving a 4WD vehicle and operation of various field equipment and boats. Possession of a Maryland safe boater certificate.
