Position Summary:




Under direct supervision from the Program Director, the Environmental Remediation Scientist is responsible for carrying out the objectives of the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California with respect to Leviathan Mine Superfund site. The Environmental Remediation Scientist is housed within Washoe Environmental Protection, and will coordinate work with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), and other stakeholders. The Remediation Scientist will monitor condition of Tribal natural resources, works closely with contractors, government, and state agencies for protection of Tribal cultural and natural resources, coordinate environmental assessments and sampling as needed, and maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.



Essential Duties & Responsibilities:




• Coordinates activities with government agencies and entities like the EPA, BIA, Forest Service, State, local waterboard, stakeholders, county and non-profit organizations.




• Manages program records including but not limited to budgets, reports, schedules, and workplans with timelines.




• Writes reports, collects data and analyzes data collected in the field.




• Conducts field inventories and assessments of Tribal resources.




• Drafts operational plans, experimental designs, and sampling methods and plans, procedures, and forms for conducting studies.




• Attends inter-agency meetings to promote protection and restoration of Tribal resources within Washoe homelands




• Participates in Tribal-federal consultation and works to meet the goals and objectives of the program and grants.




• Purchases supplies and equipment within program budget with supervisor authorization.




• Assists with grant management, developing workplans and budgets.




• Provides education and outreach to Tribal Communities and Council regarding remediation process, community input plan, and other Superfund updates from EPA and Tribal Administration.




• Performs other duties as assigned.



Physical Demands:




While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.



Work Environment:




Work is regularly performed both indoors in an office setting with a moderate noise level and outdoors where exposure to natural weather conditions and various dusts and mists may occur. The employee will spend approximately 75% in office and 25% time in the field. Prolonged standing and walking may be on uneven surfaces or unstable ground. Situations where safety-toe shoes, safety goggles, gloves, protective face shields, or hardhats are needed may occur. Evening and/or weekend work may be required. Travel is required for training, meetings, conferences, presentations, and other events.



The Washoe Tribe of Nevada & California requires a background check of each new hire for employment purposes. Therefore, all conditionally offered positions will be subject to the following:

Must be insurable under the Washoe Tribe's driving policy
Preference will be given to qualified Native American Indians.





Requirements



Minimum Qualifications:




• A Graduate Degree in environmental studies, natural resource management, watershed management, forestry, or a closely related field plus two years of field experience, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience with emphasis on native vegetation management, habitat restoration, watershed protection and invasive species control projects.




• Previous experience with grant writing, budgeting, management and reporting is required.




• Previous experience working with Superfund sites or Remediation is preferred.




• Knowledge of ESRI ArcMap, Global Positioning System and GIS is preferred.



Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications:




• Knowledge of and experience with grants, grant reporting requirements, and budgeting.




• Knowledge of the functions and structure of the Washoe Tribe and Washoe Tribal lands.




• Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county, and local laws, regulations, and requirements with respect to Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA).




• Ability to perform physically demanding work and withstand inclement weather conditions and other uncomfortable environmental conditions.




• Ability to work cooperatively with various government officials and Tribal members.




• Ability to lead others in the work and participate as a member of the work team.




• Ability to handle multiple tasks on a number of projects and meet deadlines.




• Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Microsoft 365, Teams, and presentation software (such as PowerPoint).
