Your opportunity:
You will take a critical role in ensuring the safety and cleanliness of the campus by coordinating the removal of chemical, radiological and biological materials. Maintaining a hazardous materials classification record and inventory, updating waste manifests, monitoring and assessing consultant and contractor performance, checking that work performed meets expected standards are some of the key responsibilities. You will also act as a resource, providing advice to various stakeholders on emergency response processes and preparedness. As a subject matter specialist, you will be monitoring, assessing, analyzing and interpreting contamination levels. You are passionate that health and safety/security regulations are being followed, and when necessary, reporting, recording and referring issues for resolution. You will have regular interaction with a wide variety of university stakeholders and be will key in facilitating collaboration between staff and emergency response teams.
Your responsibilities will include:
• Providing advice to others on hazardous material management practices and procedures
• Monitoring observance of health and safety/security regulations
• Monitoring and assessing consultant and contractor performance
• Providing advice to others on emergency response processes and preparedness
• Investigating and reporting on health, safety and regulatory non-compliance occurrences
• Coordinating the removal of chemical, radiological and biological materials
• Responding to calls about chemical spills
Essential Qualifications:
• Bachelor's Degree in science or engineering with a strong background in chemistry, biological agents, radiation, chemical technology specializing in hazard control and/or environmental studies or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
• Minimum four years experience in the use and handling of hazardous substances (chemical, biological and/or radioactive) or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in radiochemistry, health physics and/or toxicology desirable
• Experience with noting compliance during visits in a permitted lab (rad or bio) environment and working with and providing reports to compliance inspectors within a University setting.
• Willingness to participate in on going medical surveillance program and to be trained anduse hazardous substances protective equipment including respirators and self-containedbreathing air units
• Knowledgeable of the Ontario Health & Safety Act and General Waste Regulation
• Possession of Provincial Class 'G' driver's license required
