Job Description
Oglethorpe University is seeking a full-time Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator to ensure campus health and safety compliance with federal, state, and local laws. Responsibilities include managing safety protocols, conducting inspections, and providing training. A Bachelor's degree in a related field and at least two years of experience in environmental health and safety are required. The position is based in Brookhaven, GA and is not remote.

The Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator for Oglethorpe University works independently, under strict deadlines and changing priorities to ensure the health and safety of our campus. This includes compliance with all federal, state, and local laws including the Environmental Protection Act (EPA), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). This position will be responsible for establishing guidelines, policies, standard operating procedures, and safety training related to all physical, biological, radiological and/or chemical hazards across the entire campus.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Ensures compliance with all governmental regulations and industry standards.
Manage and maintain all data and inspection reporting required for compliance.
Create, administer, and maintain environmental compliance and standard operating procedures for hazardous materials management.
Provide technical expertise and support on occupational safety issues including regulations, control methods and best practices.
Facilitate safety training for students, staff, and faculty as needed.
Conducts safety inspections and job hazard analyses with corresponding recommendations.
Provide rapid response for hazardous situations.
Monitor and supervise all campus department representatives to ensure compliance with established procedures and job duties.
Respond and oversee indoor air quality concerns relating to staff, faculty, and students.
Act as a liaison between departments to facilitate projects relating to waste management, chemical storage and resource conservation.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, chemical engineering, biological science, environmental science, or related degree with demonstrated experience working in a laboratory environment required; graduate degree preferred.
Safety related certifications such as Certified Biological Safety Profession (CBSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), and/or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) strongly preferred.
At least two (2) years of prior work experience with environmental health and safety programs, preferably in a higher education setting.
Ability to understand, interpret and implement all aspects of federal, state and local regulations including but not limited to the EPA, OSHA, and NFPA.
Experience conducting workplace inspections including identification and abatement of any environmental or occupational hazards.
Training in laboratory safety, familiarity with laboratory equipment and protocols,
Knowledge of physical, biological, radiological and/or chemical hazards including proper handling, storage, and disposal of waste materials.
Familiarity with College and departmental policies and procedures and computer use, including Microsoft Office.
Strong administrative, organizational, and analytical skills, plus the ability to exercise independent judgement and handle emergency situations.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Physical Demands:
Intermittent sitting, standing, stooping, crouching, bending, walking, moving of light objects, using tools and equipment that require a high degree of manual dexterity, and ability to distinguish between shades of color. Work is performed in a laboratory with exposure to vapors, chemicals, animals, and open flames, thus requiring the use of protective devices and techniques.
