Job Description
The DuPage County Health Department is seeking an Environmental Health Specialist I to conduct inspections of food service establishments, schools, and pools in Wheaton, IL. Responsibilities include compliance inspections, documenting violations, and providing educational presentations. Our Environmental Health Team at the DuPage County Health Department has an opening for an Environmental Health Specialist I, at our East Public Health Center located in Lombard, Illinois. The ideal candidate will be responsible for conducting inspections of permitted facilities (restaurants, other food service establishments, schools, daycares, pools/spas) & engage in environmental health related activities; gain knowledge, interpret and apply rules and regulations of state law and local ordinances in a consistent manner.

Job Details: Monday-Friday 8:00 am to 4:30pm (37.5 hours/week) On-Call (about 4 times a year) After 4:30 pm or weekends depending on temporary food events. Use of your personal vehicle is required while working 75% of the time in the field.
This position includes a paid training program that includes job shadowing, e-learning modules, structured field activities, code review and certifications will be provided. Become a certified professional in food and pool safety.
Performs routine compliance inspections of retail food service, mobile vending, temporary food vendors; schools; child-care and nursing home facilities; public swimming pools; groundwater sourced private water systems; private sewage disposal systems; vector/animal disease surveillance, collection, and abatement; and other environmental health issues.Prepare electronic inspection reports.Documents all violations issues notices of corrective action and ensures future adherence through periodic follow up visits.Communicates clearly with permit holdersResponds to citizens’ complaints as they relate to environmental health issues.Collect environmental samples and tests as required.Conducts educational presentations on food safety and other general environmental health related topics.Provides and explains educational materials, regulations, policies, and other compliance to permit holders and the public.Participates in emergency response activities as assigned.Maintains required training, licensure and/or certification.Maintains confidentiality of privileged information and adheres to client privacy laws.Demonstrates sensitivity and understanding of other ethnic groups and cultures.Adheres to department guidelines for attendance and punctuality, meets established productivity standards.Available to respond to afterhours emergency calls on a rotating basis.Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health or a related field which required a minimum of thirty semester hours or forty-five quarter hours in the physical and/or biological sciences. Must attend paid, on-site HR New Hire training in Wheaton.
