Energy Storage Technical Specialist

Piper Maddox is hiring an Energy Storage Technical Specialist for a startup focused on standalone energy storage projects in the US. The role involves leading the engineering and optimization of battery energy storage systems (BESS), collaborating across teams, and developing equipment standards. Candidates should have 3+ years of experience in energy storage and a relevant engineering degree. This is a full-time position based in Rose Hill, VA.

The business is a wholly owned subsidiary of a major international energy company and has the financial backing and support to grow at an incredible scale over the next several years. They have a healthy pipeline and some great targets they will be looking to hit and are building out a team to help them accomplish these goals.

We are seeking an Energy Storage Technical Specialist to lead the engineering and optimization of battery energy storage systems (BESS). This role will collaborate across teams—from development to construction and operations—to ensure their energy storage projects are designed and executed effectively.

Key Responsibilities:
• Develop and maintain BESS equipment standards and specifications.
• Work with procurement and vendors to refine CAPEX and OPEX estimates.
• Evaluate energy storage products, technologies, and manufacturers.
• Optimize system design, degradation, and augmentation strategies.
• Solve technical challenges across project lifecycles and capture lessons learned.
• Provide training and create SOPs for energy storage systems.
• Support fire safety protocols, risk assessment, and emergency planning.

Qualifications:
• 3+ years of experience in energy storage development, design, or construction.
• 2+ years in utility-scale (50+ MW) renewable or storage projects preferred.
• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical or relevant engineering preferred.
