Position Summary

Are you a dynamic communicator, relationship-builder, and strategic thinker with a passion for public relations and government affairs? NM RETA is seeking a Director of Public & Government Relations to lead our stakeholder relations, public information, and community engagement efforts. This is a high-visibility, high-impact role for someone who knows New Mexico’s unique political and community landscape and thrives on making connections that matter.

Key Responsibilities

· Stakeholder Relations: Build and maintain strong relationships with government officials, community leaders, and industry partners.

· Public Relations: Develop and execute PR strategies; serve as liaison with our external PR firm.

· Community Engagement: Address community concerns, educate the public, and increase awareness of RETA’s mission and projects.

· Legislative Affairs: Prepare and support the Executive Director (ED) and Deputy Director for legislative sessions, public appearances, and media engagements.

· Social Media & Web: Establish and maintain a strong, sensible social media presence (especially LinkedIn); keep the website current and impactful.

· Content Creation: Write compelling talking points, public education materials, and website content tailored to diverse audiences.

· Strategic Counsel: Advise leadership on messaging, policy development, and navigating contentious issues.

· Event Prioritization: Identify and prioritize key events and appearances for RETA leadership.

· Collaboration: Work with lobbyists, interface with state agencies (NMERD, NM Environment Department), and coordinate with the PR firm on messaging and outreach.

Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Political Science, or related field (or commensurate experience)

· 3-5 years’ experience in social media management (especially LinkedIn)

· 3-5 years’ experience working with the NM Legislature (session work required)

· Existing relationships with New Mexico government and community leaders

· Strong writing and editing skills, including talking points and public education materials

· Deep knowledge of New Mexico’s political, governmental, and community landscape

· Valid driver’s license and ability to travel throughout NM

· Experience in utilities or renewable energy (3-5 years)

· Experience in both government and private sector, or NGOs

· Lobbyist experience with the NM Legislature

· Policy development experience

· Exceptional communicator who adapts messaging to different audiences

· Proven relationship-builder and networker

· Strategic thinker who can make sound judgment calls in representing the organization

· Hybrid role: Mix of remote and in-person work; must be able to travel to meetings and events across NM

· Travel: Less than 5% overnight (within NM); occasional evenings and rare weekends

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $95,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
