The Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts is hiring a Compost Utility Equipment Operator I/II for its Tulare Lake Compost facility in Kettleman City, CA. The role involves operating equipment for composting operations, maintaining records, and performing various tasks related to composting. Applicants need a valid California driver license and relevant experience. The position follows a 9/80 work schedule with alternating Fridays off.

COMPOST UTILITY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I, II

Kettleman City, CA

The Sanitation Districts are a non-civil services public agency with over 1,700 employees. Tulare Lake Compost (TLC) is a state-of-the-art, 175-acre facility located near Kettleman City in Kings County, California. At the facility, an eco-friendly process is used to combine agricultural green wastes from the Central Valley with biosolids from Los Angeles County to create an optimal mixture for composting. The facility currently has the capacity to transform up to 100,000 wet tons per year (wtpy) of anaerobically digested and dewatered biosolids into valuable, nutrient-rich, Class A Exceptional Quality compost.

TLC is owned and operated by the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County as part of their diversified biosolids management program.

This is a 9/80 position with alternating Fridays as the rotating day off (RDO).

The list of eligible candidates resulting from this posting may be used to fill any additional vacancies that may occur in the next twelve (12) months.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
To operate equipment in support of the daily operations and maintenance of a composting facility.

JOB SUMMARY:

The major job duties are listed below. For a detailed list, please see the job description.
• Inspect equipment prior to use and report any repair or maintenance needs.
• Fuel vehicles and equipment.
• Keep basic records of tasks performed using computerized and manual recordkeeping systems.
• Operate utility equipment and use hand tools to perform composting activities, custodial, and other processing duties.
• Use equipment to push, lift, pile, convey, place, mix, grind, screen, and spread composting materials as well as finished compost.
• Assist with building heaps in various phases.
• Assist in manually anchoring and sealing the compost cover system.

Applicants must possess all of the following:
• A valid California Class C driver license for positions performing on-the-job driving.

For Compost Utility Equipment Operator I:
• One (1) year of progressively responsible experience operating a variety of utility equipment.

For Compost Utility Equipment Operator II:
• One (1) year as a Compost Utility Equipment Operator I for the County Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County or equivalent.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
• Prior experience operating loaders, skid-steers, dump trucks, or similar utility equipment is highly desirable.

Knowledge of:
• Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of a composting facility.
• Hazards and safety precautions of the work.

Ability to:
• Perform the more difficult and complex tasks of the crew.
• Use various hand tools.
• Safely operate a variety of utility equipment.
• Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time.
• Understand verbal and written instructions.
• Understand and apply safety rules and procedures.

SELECTION PROCESS:
• All applications will be reviewed to determine if the conditions and qualifications for testing are met.
• The selection process will consist of a written exam weighted at 30%, a performance exam weighted at 40%, and an interview weighted at 30%.
• Candidates must receive a qualifying score on each selection component to move forward in the selection process.
• The written exam will take place during the week of August 19 at Tulare Lake Compost in Kettleman City, CA.
• Interviews and the performance exam will tentatively take place the week of August 26.
