CDC Environmental Public Health Tracking Fellowship: Science Development and Informatics

The CDC Environmental Public Health Tracking Fellowship at Zintellect in Atlanta, GA, offers a research opportunity with the Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice. The role involves supporting the Tracking Network's maintenance and expansion, developing environmental health indicators, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team. CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice (DEHSP) within the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.



The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.



The National Environmental Public Health Tracking Program connects environmental and public health information to drive innovative, cutting edge programs and solutions that protect and improve the health of communities across the county. We do this through the National Environmental Public Health Tracking Network, a multi-tiered, Web-based, interoperable system of data, tools, and services. We are a collaborative team of public health, data science, informatics, and communication experts developing tools and processes that support the use of data to solve public health issues. In collaboration with federal, state, and local partners, we identify priority environmental health issues, determine key surveillance questions, and evaluate the utility of existing data for answering the question and informing the issue.



Research Project: The selected participant will gain experience in the Tracking Program by providing critical support for (1) the maintenance and expansion of the Tracking Network (http://ephtracking.cdc.gov) and (2) the use and dissemination of these data to support public health actions. The participant will be involved with the Science Development and Informatics teams in the:




Development of environmental health surveillance goals, development of environmental health indicators and measures, and identification of appropriate statistical, analytic, and data visualization methods
Implementation of new and updating of existing indicators and measures
Development of new tools and processes for data management, dissemination, and visualization
Dissemination of data and information to inform public health actions


Learning Objectives:




The participant will learn how to apply epidemiology and environmental health science within a data science and informatics program
The participant will collaborate with other scientists to analyze health and environmental data
The participant will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, engage in both group and independent assignments, and contribute to both routine and exploratory projects

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: As soon as a qualified candidate is identified. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.



Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.



Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.



Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.



Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program.
