South Environmental, a woman-owned consulting firm in Pasadena, California, seeks an Architectural Historian to assist with historic built environment projects. About Us
South Environmental is a small, woman-owned environmental consulting firm based in Pasadena, California. We specialize in cultural, paleontological, and biological resources consulting for compliance with federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations. We are currently seeking support on our architectural history/historic built environment projects throughout California.
Job Description
The primary duties of the position involve assisting with the preparation of historic built environment/architectural history technical reports. This includes but is not limited to survey of various project sites; digital photography of buildings and structures; and property research to confirm year of construction, architect and builders, owners and occupants, and any alterations made to the property over time. Research may include both online and in-person review of local libraries and archives (historic newspapers, maps, photographs, etc.).
All levels of experience are encouraged to apply. While most of our work occurs in Southern California, we are open to candidates throughout California.
Qualified candidates will possess:
• Bachelors’ degree in history, architectural history, art history, historic preservation, or related.
• Strong writing and research skills/experience.
• Excellent communication skills with a strong attention to detail and time-management.
• Previous experience conducting research via online and in-person sources including historic newspapers, genealogy records, building permits, libraries, and other public data repositories.
• Previous experience surveying and documenting buildings.
• Previous experience with preparing State of California Department of Parks and Recreation Series 523 forms for historical resources.
• Previous experience evaluating properties in consideration of National Register, California Register, and local level eligibility criteria.
• Ability to travel for field work (occasionally overnight).
• A willingness to learn new things.

Pay: $60,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
