The Pembina Institute is offering 2025 Summer Policy Internships (Hybrid) for students to support research and policy development in clean energy for buildings and transportation. The 16-week internships, from May to August 2025, are available at various locations across Canada, allowing for remote work. Interns will conduct analyses, research best practices, draft reports, and engage with stakeholders, contributing to Canada's sustainable energy transition.
Join us in shaping Canada’s sustainable energy future

The Pembina Institute is seeking two highly motivated students to join our Buildings and Transportation teams for16-week policy internships based out of any one of our five offices (Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa, Toronto). These internships, running from May to August 2025, will provide research support and contribute to the development of policy solutions that advance decarbonization in these critical sectors.
Who we are

At the Pembina Institute, it’s all hands on deck and it has been for the last 40 years.

Our 55+ person team, distributed across the country, are passionate and dedicated, but we don't sweat the small stuff. We’re too busy tackling one of the most important issues of our time: Canada’s clean energy transition.

In that transition, we don’t leave anyone behind and believe each member of our team plays a critical role in achieving our goals. We ensure equity but promote individuality. We lead with curiosity — challenging our own ideas and limiting beliefs, being open to diversity of thought and opinion. We use evidence-based thinking to inform our recommendations to decision-makers and understand that to make long-lasting changes, we need to take a practical approach when collaborating with others.

Our commitment to responsible development, and our “tough, but fair” approach, using research, consulting and convening, gives us credibility with decision-makers whose actions today are setting the direction for the planet. Are you ready to join us?
Meet the team

The Communities and Decarbonization team focuses on enabling effective energy use in buildings and vehicles across Canada, and advocates for the effective climate and energy policies, along with regulatory improvements to prioritize these goals. The team also considers the human element - exploring the impact of energy policy on residents, ratepayers and workers.
The opportunity

As an intern, we’ll be leaning on you to bring your analytical skills to bear on research, writing and analysis in the context of clean energy policy for either buildings or transportation.
Your key responsibilities

• Conduct quantitative and qualitative technical analyses.

• Update and maintain our public engagement database and email lists.
• Conduct interviews with key stakeholders from government, industry and civil society.
• Support the planning and execution of webinars and engagement sessions on various topics.
What we’re looking for

You are a student enrolled in one or more of the following fields at an accredited Canadian post-secondary institution: engineering, sciences, economics, policy, environmental studies. You’re highly motivated and passionate about contributing meaningfully to transitioning Canada to clean energy — you’re driven to make an impact.
What you bring
• General knowledge of climate science and environmental impacts of energy, acquired through education, volunteering or work experience.
• General knowledge of provincial policy and regulations in the sector.
• Strong interpersonal and communications skills.
• Able to conduct quantitative and qualitative technical research in energy and environmental policy.
