Job Description
The Work Health and Safety Advisor position at the Australian Government's Department of Climate Change involves promoting a positive safety culture, managing WHS risks, and supporting WHS strategies across various locations in Australia. Who we are
People Division, led by the Chief People Officer (CPO), provides human resources (HR) functions for the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (the department) with a clear focus on the department’s most valued asset: its staff. Alongside contemporary HR functions, projects and strategies People Division is also responsible for:
• enhancing the department’s focus on safety
• enterprise bargaining
• cultural and change management
• the department’s response to Australian Public Service (APS) reforms.
People Safety, Support and Wellbeing Branch (PSSW) is responsible for leading the departments approach to providing a safe and respectful workplace, including health, safety and wellbeing strategies. The PSSW Branch also provides health and safety support for Parks Australia and the Australian Antarctic Division, working with these divisions to manage complex risks associated with these operational areas. The PSSW Branch is responsible for:
• Work, Health and Safety.
• Wellbeing.
• Human Resource advisory services.
• Performance, probation and rehabilitation services.
The department’s WHS Section partners with the business to understand our unique and diverse health, safety and wellbeing needs to design, implement, and support a purpose built WHS Management System and WHS Information System that places our people at the heart of everything we do and enables a positive health and safety culture.

The job
As the Work Health and Safety Advisor you will be responsible for, but not limited to:
• Support and promote a positive safety culture
• Contribute to the systematic management of WHS risk through providing WHS advice and support, proactively engaging with work areas to mitigate risk.
• Support and drive WHS strategies and initiatives
• Contribute to the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the WHS Management System
• Assist with incident investigations and work with stakeholders to identify appropriate corrective actions.
• Provide support for WHS training
• Contribute to the development of an integrated WHS framework
• Conduct objective systematic analyses, draw accurate conclusions based on evidence, make recommendations to support the design and delivery of WHS improvement strategies draft correspondence, papers, briefings and reports on a range of WHS matters.
• Delivering and supporting initiatives outlined in our Safety Improvement Plan/s.
• Administration and support to WHS working groups and Committees.

What we are looking for
We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate the following:
• At least 3 years’ experience working in a WHS role
• Systems administration experience in incident management systems
• Technical knowledge of work health and safety legislation
• Working knowledge of the Work Health Safety Act 2011, Work Health and Safety Regulations 2011, Work Health Safety Codes of Practice, and relevant Australian Standards, and their application in a Commonwealth Government environment.
Desirable qualifications
• Certificate 4 in Workplace Health and Safety and/ or equivalent workplace experience
• WHS/OHS Auditing CertificateI
• ICAM Investigation experience
Eligibility and other requirements
Citizenship - to be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.
Security Clearance - this position requires a Baseline Vetting security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
Pre-employment checks - your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where required a pre-employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation and a probation period.
