Job Description
The Wildlife Biologist II position at the State of South Carolina involves developing and implementing conservation projects for marsh and wading birds across the state. Responsibilities include designing research, training staff and volunteers, managing data, assisting in grant writing, and creating outreach materials. A master's degree in a relevant field or a bachelor's with two years of experience is required. The job is full-time with a salary of $45.3K per year.
This employee will be responsible for developing and implementing survey, monitoring and conservation projects for marsh and wading birds statewide including population assessments, research, and management on state and private lands.
Job Duties Include:
• Designing and implementing marsh and wading bird research, monitoring, and conservation projects statewide on public and private lands to determine species distributions, population statuses, and conservation needs.
• Training and supervising temporary personnel hired to collect and process data for marsh and wading bird projects.
• Training and coordinating volunteers and other project partners, if appropriate, to ensure data collected is completed accurately and in a timely manner.
• Advising and assisting SCDNR staff with marsh and wading bird management activities on state lands.
• Entering, storing, backing up, and processing collected data in a timely manner and according to protocols.
• Reviewing data collected by temporary personnel, volunteers, and other project partners to ensure data is accurate, complete, and properly formatted. Preparing data to be entered into long-term datasets. Summarizing and analyzing data for use in reports or publications, if appropriate.
• Assisting in writing grant proposals, annual grant reports, internal reports, and manuscripts for publication.
• Presenting research and monitoring findings at professional meetings, if appropriate.
• Creating outreach materials, including brochures, signs, web site updates, and social media posts, to disseminate information about population statuses and management techniques.
• Maintaining marsh and wading bird project inventory and all assigned equipment in operational readiness.
A master's degree in biology, chemistry or related technical area field; or a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management or related technical area and two (2) years of experience relevant to the job.
Knowledge of wading and marsh biology and southeastern habitat management practices. Ability to conduct research and monitoring projects for marsh and wading birds. Experience applying research techniques (call-response surveys, nest monitoring, autonomous recording units, camera traps, capture and banding, aerial photography and surveys, water level monitoring, vegetation surveys). Ability to manage habitat through mechanical removal, herbicide application, and water application. Ability to develop and follow detailed protocols for data collection and processing. Experience maintaining large databases and analyzing data. Ability to use GIS, Program R, and Microsoft Office, including Access. Ability to train and supervise temporary personnel. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally on technical and non-technical subjects and work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders groups.A cover letter and current CV are requested to supplement the required state application.
