Job Description

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is hiring a temporary Water Resources Engineer for a 24-month position in Oak Ridge, TN. The role involves supporting hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, data collection, and analysis related to water resources. Candidates should have an MS degree in a relevant field and the ability to work on-site. Preferred qualifications include experience with modeling tools and scientific computing.

Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL, http://www.ornl.gov) is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver ground-breaking solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. The Water Resource Science and Engineering Group within the Environmental Sciences Division (ESD; http://www.esd.ornl.gov) at ORNL is seeking to hire a Water Resources Assistant Engineer with the skills and creativity to apply novel water resources, mechanical, and/or power system engineering knowledge to support ORNL’s long-term water power technologies research and development (R&D) efforts.

ESD is an interdisciplinary research and development organization with more than 60 years of achievement in local, regional, national, and international environmental research. Our vision is to expand scientific knowledge and develop innovative strategies and technologies that will strengthen the nation’s leadership in creating solutions to help sustain the Earth’s natural resources. Our staff conducts research, develop technology, and perform analyses to understand and assess responses of environmental systems at the environment-human interface and the consequences of alternative energy and environmental strategies.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
• Support hydrologic & hydraulics model simulation and verification, with a specific focus on flood inundation mapping.
• Support hydrologic and hydraulics in-situ data collecting, processing, and analysis for a variety of projects in the field of water resources engineering.
• Support remote sensing data collecting, processing, and analysis.
• Support literature review and synthesis in the broad fields of hydropower, hydraulics, and hydrologic studies.
• Support on analysis, visualization, and writing of research reports and presentations.

Basic Qualifications:
• MS degree in water science and engineering or closely related subject area with at least one year of relevant experience
• Ability to relocate and work on-site
• Good interpersonal skills in English, both oral and written
• Ability to work in a team environment and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with high-performance computing or Linux-based systems
• Experience with flood or hydrologic modeling tools such as TRITON, LISFLOOD-FP, AutoRoute, RAPID, VIC, PRMS, SUMMA
• Experience with urban or stormwater models such as SWMM, PCSWMM
• Experience with scientific computing and geospatial data processing using tools such as Python, Matlab, R, QGIS/ArcGIS
